The change stems from a late-December debacle in which several planes loaded with international travelers were stuck for up to 10 hours on snowy New York runways. That's one provision in a new passenger-protection rule to be issued Wednesday. The rule also will require airlines to refund bag fees if they lose customers' luggage, to include fees and taxes in advertised prices, and to pay passengers more if they get bumped from ...
(Dec. 20) -- Travelers in Europe just can't seem to catch a break. Less than a month after freezing temperatures and heavy snow closed roads and airports across Europe, the continent was hit again this weekend by harsh winter weather, continuing to delay travelers today. LONDON -- A white Christmas looks almost certain in northern Europe this year, but few people are celebrating the prospect of yet more snow. After three days of blizzards, much of the continent's transport infrastructure has frozen to a standstill, leaving hundreds of thousands of travelers stuck at airports, at railway stations and even on freeways as they try to get home for the holidays. Paris -- where snow continued to fall this morning -- has been one of the worst-hit cities, with a quarter of all flights canceled from Charles de Gaulle airport this weekend. Airport operator Aeroports de ...
LONDON (Oct. 27) -- The chairman of British Airways has launched a scathing attack on the "completely redundant" airport checks requested by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration and urged the U.K. to stop "kowtowing" to American demands for ever more security. BA boss Martin Broughton's comments reflect a growing frustration among airport and airline owners, as well as the traveling public, with the steady build-up of rules covering everything from footwear to liquids following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Speaking at the annual conference of the U.K. Airport Operators ...
(Sept. 16) – Pope Benedict XVI landed in Scotland today for a historic U.K. visit that's already clouded in more controversy: One of the pope's top advisers has been forced to drop out of his entourage after likening Britain to a Third-World country. Cardinal Walter Kasper, the Vatican's leading expert on relations with the Church of England, told the German magazine Focus that arriving in London, "you sometimes think you've landed in a Third-World country." Asked whether Christians face discrimination in Britain, the 77-year-old cardinal replied: "Yes. Above all, an aggressive new ...
LONDON (Aug. 27) -- Terrified passengers aboard a British Airways jet thought they were about to plunge to their death after the plane's pilot accidentally activated an emergency announcement. The high-altitude gaffe Tuesday caused a chilling automated message to be broadcast in the cabin. "This is an emergency announcement," said a calm female voice, according to The Sun. "We may shortly need to make an emergency landing on water." The Boeing 747 was over the North Sea en route to Hong Kong from Heathrow Airport at the time of the incident. (June 3) -- British Airways apologized for a photograph that showed a boarding pass made out in the name of Osama bin Laden. The picture, published on the cover of British Airways' internal magazine, LHR News, showed an iPhone with an electronic boarding pass for bin Laden to fly from London to Washington, D.C., the Daily Mail reported. "A mistake was made and we are working to find out how this occurred," British Airways said in a Twitter message in response to a tweet about the story. "Apologies for the error." How did a photo of a boarding pass for Osama bin Laden end up in British ...
LONDON (May 30) -- British Airways cabin crew launched a new five-day strike today as a bitter dispute with management over pay and working conditions dragged on with no sign of any breakthrough. Many flights to and from London's Heathrow -- Europe's busiest airport -- were affected by the walkout. But the airline insisted it could operate more than half of its services because more cabin crew than expected had decided to cross the picket line. Cabin crew walked off their jobs May 24 for five days and began the new round of strikes Sunday after talks collapsed Friday. They plan to strike for ...
(April 20) -- To the travelers stranded throughout much of Europe for the past week, the roar of jets filling the skies today could not have been a more welcome sound. "We were in the hotel having breakfast, and we heard an aircraft take off," Bob Basso, a San Diego resident who had been stuck in Paris, told ABC News. "Everybody got up and applauded." According to Europe's air traffic agency, Eurocontrol, some 13,000 flights were cleared to take off and land today at the airports that have been closed since the eruption of Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano last week. A normal Tuesday ...
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has dispatched two warships to France to rescue British airline passengers stranded by a cloud of volcanic ash that has grounded most flights over Europe for the past five days, The Times of London reports. The HMS Ark Royal and the HMS Ocean are expected to enter the English Channel in the next two days, and a third, the HMS Albion, is headed for Spain and may be able to pick up passengers from there. Brown called the delays "the biggest challenge to our aviation transport network for many years" after flying restrictions were extended to 1 a.m. Tuesday morning. ...
