Kathleen Parker Splits 'Parker Spitzer'; Instant Reactions

After just four months, Kathleen Parker is leaving the CNN talk show "Parker Spitzer." Starting Monday, the program will go by "In the Arena," and feature Eliot Spitzer and a cast of guests, including E.D. Hill and Will Cain, along with "others within and outside the CNN family," CNN executive Ken Jautz said. Parker, a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist at The Washington Post, said in a statement that she will refocus on her "syndicated newspaper column and other writings." She also plans to make occasional appearances on CNN. The New York Times' Brian Stelter gave an early reading of the ...

Television Losing Ground to the Internet as a Main Source of News

Television Losing Ground to the Internet as a Main Source of News

Television remains the main source of national and international news for most Americans, but it is steadily losing its lead over the Internet, according to a Pew Research Center poll conducted Dec. 1-5. The trend toward the Internet is particularly marked among 18-to-29 year-olds who now favor it over television to learn what's going on in the country and the world. Sixty-six percent of those surveyed said they get their dose of news from television compared to 41 percent who said they count on the Internet. While the number of those using the Internet for most of their news has not changed ...

Joe Scarborough Suspended by MSNBC

(Nov. 19) -- Here we go again. For the second time this month, MSNBC has suspended one of its program anchors over campaign donations to political candidates. Joe Scarborough, the host of "Morning Joe," received news that the network was giving him a two-day suspension over what it described as eight contributions of $500 to friends and family members who ran for political office, Politico reports. "I recognize that I have a responsibility to honor the guidelines and conditions of my employment, and I regret that I failed to do so in this matter," Scarborough said in a statement. "I ...

Reinstated Keith Olbermann Apologizes

(Nov. 8) -- What would Walter Cronkite think? Today, just three days after NBC News suspended Keith Olbermann, the hybrid commentator/news anchor host of "Countdown," for violating the network's policy forbidding journalists from making political contributions to candidates without getting prior approval of network officials, he apologized to viewers in a letter. "You should know that I mistakenly violated an inconsistently applied rule -- which I previously knew nothing about -- that pertains to the process by which such political contributions are approved by NBC," Olbermann said in the ...

The Cable News Patrol: My Long National Nightmare Is Over!

The Cable News Patrol: My Long National Nightmare Is Over!

At the finish line, there were no high-school marching bands, no pyrotechnics – not even a perky young TV reporter cloyingly asking the all-purpose how-do-you-feel question. Instead, at 1:26 pm Sunday afternoon, I rapturously luxuriated in a heavenly choir serenading me with the sounds of silence, as a blessed sense of peace washed over my body. After more than 60 hours of eye-glazed communion with the three major cable news networks (enough time to watch every episode from all three seasons of "Mad Men" twice), the television set was mercifully off. I had set out on this ...

The Cable News Patrol: Rounding Up the Usual Suspects and Subjects

The Cable News Patrol: Rounding Up the Usual Suspects and Subjects

Already, my life feels like it has been reduced to a cheesy Internet banner ad: "New York Man Watches TV at Home – And Is Paid for It, Just Like a Real Job." On Monday, I began my masochistic regimen of watching cable TV news for 12 hours a day in a valiant effort to...err...I dunno...maybe...probe the subterranean depths of the American political psyche. In truth, my motivation had something to do with frustration at being stuck at home recovering from Achilles tendon surgery (I told them that they could start the Trojan War without me). Perhaps others in my situation might be reading ...
