Low-tax Texas is considering tapping its rainy day account to soften the effects of deep spending cuts. New York's governor pushed through budget cuts while keeping a campaign pledge to avoid tax increases. And residents of Illinois and Florida are getting a very different take on taxes: Illinois passed a massive increase, while Florida proposes giving its taxpayers a big break. The five states are the nation's most populous but are taking very ...
Their paths have diverged. Intense rivals in the 2010 race to become governor of the state of California, Jerry Brown and Meg Whitman spent today in markedly different ways. Gov. Brown declared a fiscal emergency for California, a procedural move that will reboot a 45-day clock that will allow him to put forth a new plan to help solve a nearly $27 billion budget shortfall, the Sacramento Bee reported. Brown's proposed budget is filled with big cuts to higher education and state services, and also calls for the revoking of cell phones from some government employees. Shortly before Brown made ...
Can you hear me now? Well, not for long ... if you're a California state employee. Jerry Brown, just over a week after starting his second stint as governor, issued an executive order today requiring that half of the state's government-funded cell phones be returned by June 1, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The move, according to the Los Angeles Times, is one of several steps the new governor is taking to dig the Golden State out of a $25 billion budget deficit. Brown is also examining the 13,600 light-duty vehicles in the state fleet that are not used by public safety agencies, ...
(Dec. 6) -- Things aren't so pretty out West. In a one-two punch of bad economic news, the governors of both California and Washington declared their states to be in a state of fiscal emergency and have called for their respective legislatures to hold a special session to deal with the ongoing problem. In both states, when an emergency session of the legislature is called, the governing body must concentrate solely on the issue at hand, rather than turn its attention elsewhere. So what options lie ahead for these two Pacific Rim states as each attempts to retailor its budget priorities? ...
(Nov. 11) -- It may sound a little odd, but California's mounting deficit and debt woes might be a great investment opportunity. Over the next two weeks, the beleaguered state plans to offer guaranteed bonds to investors as a way of attempting to help bridge what is now estimated to be a looming $25 billion budget shortfall. As the Los Angeles Times reports, selling the revenue anticipation notes, or RANs, could generate much-needed cash for California and could also be a savvy move for those some individuals seeking a higher rate of return on their money. The appeal of the RANs: They're ...
Google on Tuesday released the top searches within the United States for 2009; the results are surprising and interesting. The top Google searches for senators show that people are more interested in reading about Democrats than Republicans -- only Chuck Grassley of Iowa at No. 9 made the list for the GOP. And it also shows that people are doing more searches for senators with key roles in legislation than for senators caught up in scandals. No surprise, Ted Kennedy tops the Senate Google searches, as he died this year. Second on the Senate list is Nelson, but the Google people don't tell us ...

California officials say they've reached an agreement on the $26-billion state budget shortfall. Still, they're not quite ready to say when they'll be done sending out IOUs to their creditors. The Wall Street Journal reports that $15 billion will come in the form of budget cuts, the bulk -- $9 billion -- from education. More than $4 billion is being borrowed or redirected from local governments, a measure that has drawn fire from local officials. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and California lawmakers have been at a stalemate for weeks as they tried to close the budget gap. During the ...
