Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!(Nov. 17) -- Is he the embodiment of the American dream, or a criminal? On Tuesday, Fresno State University student body president Pedro Ramirez made what some people considered a startling admission: He is an illegal immigrant. The revelation came after The Collegian, Fresno State's student newspaper, questioned Ramirez about his status after it received an anonymous e-mail tip. 1. Ramirez pays in-state tuition. Ten states, including California, allow undocumented immigrants to pay in-state tuition at colleges and universities, the Los Angeles Times reported. Ramirez takes advantage of that ...
(Nov. 16) -- California's highest court has ruled that illegal immigrants who attend high school in the state for at least three years should be eligible for in-state tuition rates at public universities there. The ruling Monday was unanimous among the California Supreme Court's seven judges. It overturns a lower court ruling that sided with opponents of the law, who argued that it unfairly favors illegal immigrants over U.S. citizens from outside California, who have to pay much higher, out-of-state tuition fees. Paying in-state tuition rates can save students as much as a $23,000 a year ...
(Aug. 4) -- Proposition 8 was a California ballot initiative that amended the state's constitution. It was passed on Nov. 4, 2008, with 52.3 percent of the vote. The measure was introduced after California's Supreme Court ruled in May of that year that California's Constitution guaranteed same-sex couples the right to marry. The text of Proposition 8 is straightforward in what it lays out. It reads as follows: Sec. 7.5. Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California. After Proposition 8 was passed, the California Supreme Court ruled that adding the amendment ...
LOS ANGELES (Feb. 8) – The California Supreme Court today struck a blow for bicyclist footrest-carriers everywhere, ruling that they are not, in fact, the same thing as a pair of brass knuckles. On the afternoon of Aug. 21, 2007, a Los Angeles police officer spotted a 14-year-old boy riding his bicycle without a helmet and stopped him. The boy consented to a search and the officer found in his pocket a metal footrest from a bicycle – but not the boy's bicycle, which had both pedals intact. The officer knew something about gang weapons, and, according to the court records, ...
Lt. Dan Choi, the first soldier discharged under "Don't ask/Don't tell" during the Obama administration, was among protesters at a DNC fundraiser headlined by President Obama: Protest organizers called for Obama to repeal the government's "don't ask, don't tell" policy that exempts openly gay men and women from serving in the military. Lt. Dan Choi, a West Point graduate and an Arabic translator, was discharged from the Army when he declared he was gay on national television. His conviction that the military's policy is "a deadly poison" inspired him to lead the protest on Wednesday. Here's ...
The California Supreme Court has rendered its decision on Proposition 8, the ban on same-sex marriage that passed on November's ballot. The court upheld the ban on same-sex marriages, while also ruling to continue to recognize the 18,000 existing California same-sex marriages that occurred before the ban. While the ruling is disappointing to proponents of marriage equality, the issue is far from settled. A new measure to overturn Prop 8 could find its way onto California ballots as early as 2010. According to a recent poll, 48% of Californians would vote to repeal Prop 8, versus 47% who would ...
