Need More Air? Artificial Trees to Convert CO2 to O2

Need More Air? Artificial Trees to Convert CO2 to O2

It's not nice to fool Mother Nature. Or is it? If you're not getting enough air, you might want to spend time sitting under a newly designed artificial tree that converts carbon dioxide into breathable oxygen. In the modern world of urban pollution, we can't seem to grow enough trees to naturally convert carbon dioxide into life-sustaining air -- the process of photosynthesis -- until now. Researchers at New York's Columbia University, working with Influx Studio in Paris, have designed a faux or artificial tree. It's basically a machine fashioned to resemble a dragon blood tree, complete ...

NASA: CO2, Not Water Vapor, Causes Global Warming

NASA: CO2, Not Water Vapor, Causes Global Warming

(Oct. 15) -- The Earth's atmosphere is a complicated place. Somewhere in that swirling, shifting mixture of air, water and other gasses is the key to keeping us earthlings alive -- or to cooking us. Carbon dioxide has always received the most media attention as the leading cause of climate change, and a new study from NASA does more than concur with this assessment: It finds CO2 is overwhelmingly responsible for raising Earth's temperature. Led by Andrew Lacis at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, the study found that while water vapor and clouds account for 75 percent of the ...

New Eco-App Declares U2 Bad for the Planet

New Eco-App Declares U2 Bad for the Planet

(Sept. 7) -- Justin Bieber's place in the musical canon may be a matter of debate, but from an environmental standpoint, at least, he's on the side of the angels. Bieber is one of a number of artists -- along with Jay-Z, Lady Gaga and the Georgia indie-pop band Of Montreal -- to be designated an "Earth Saver" by a new app that measures a touring act's carbon footprint. The app, Earth Destroyers, calculates how many pounds of carbon dioxide an artist produces by touring. Using data from the tracking site Bandsintown, artists are classified as either good or bad for the planet depending on how ...

Report: Loophole in Climate Bill Could Level Forests

Report: Loophole in Climate Bill Could Level Forests

(June 16) -- The Senate climate bill, already controversial, contains a loophole that allows utility companies to discount all emissions from burning biomass fuels, according to a report released today by environmentalists. That flaw could effectively erase 80 percent of the bill's promised carbon dioxide reductions and provide a taxpayer subsidy for cutting down millions of acres of trees, the report says. "Biomass" is a catch-all term that could refer to silage, grasses, sawdust or waste wood or fresh trees. The proposed legislation treats all sources of biomass equally, but ...

Opinion: Corporations at the Cap-and-Trade Trough

(April 26) -- When Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., threatened this weekend to pull back his support of a global warming bill he co-authored -- along with Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass., and Joe Lieberman, I-Conn. -- it looked as though the once-dead cap-and-trade bill could be dead again. That might be just as well. Unlike the previous cap-and-trade bills, the new bill, based on what's been reported by Mother Jones, has all kinds of new goodies for utility companies, oil companies and other corporate interests to gain their support. Indeed, if you can think of a big special interest group that would ...

EPA: No New Regs for Greenhouse Gases

EPA: No New Regs for Greenhouse Gases

The Environmental Protection Agency is expected to announce today that it will not issue new regulations for greenhouse gas em missions this year, delaying action on the issue until the next Administration takes office. Last year, the Supreme Court ruled that the EPA must regulate carbon dioxide under the Clean Air Act, or provide a good reason for not regulating it. The EPA argued that it did not have the authority under the act to regulate carbon dioxide partly because the gas is a ubiquitous substance, and not simply a product of emissions from factories and power plants. The EPA denied that ...

Bush to Announce 'Realistic' Emissions Plan

Bush to Announce 'Realistic' Emissions Plan

After receiving Pope Benedict XVI at the White House today, President Bush will get back to the business of state, announcing a new initiative on greenhouse gas emissions. The Administration will propose a new set of reduction targets for power plants to be met by 2025, in hopes of forestalling future regulatory action by Congress and the next Administration. Today's announcement seeks to begin a process of putting the nation on a path to regulating emissions in what the White House calls a "realistic" way. Whoever is elected president, Republican John McCain or Democrats Barack Obama or ...

EPA Blocks State Regulation of Emissions

By  Mark Impomeni - Politics Daily
EPA Blocks State Regulation of Emissions

The Environmental Protection Agency ruled that a consortium of seventeen states including California, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut could not issue their own regulations limiting carbon dioxide emissions from cars. The EPA said that it believed that a single national standard would be preferable to individual and perhaps differing state limits. EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson said that such a move by the states would be preempted by any future Federal rule anyway, and would render portions of the energy bill just passed by Congress and signed into law by President Bush ...
