Yogi Bear Arrested in Utah: Smarter Than the Average Perp

After years of snatching picnic baskets and duping park rangers without consequence, Yogi Bear appears to have finally been trapped by police in Utah. Officers from the Utah County Sheriff's Office apparently captured the famed Hanna-Barbera character on fishing without a license, immigration charges and other offenses. Yogi's cartoonish mug shot appeared on the Sheriff's Office website earlier this week, listing the suspect as a 60-year-old who stands 5 foot 8, weighs 490 pounds and has already been released on bond. ...

Mom: My Kids Found Porn on 'Dora the Explorer' DVD

Apparently, you can't judge a DVD by its cover. A New York City mother says she was shocked when her kids tried to put on a new Nickelodeon cartoon DVD but instead found themselves watching an explicit pornographic video. Candice Connor told the New York Daily News that her boys -- ages 11 and 3 -- thought they would see characters from "Dora the Explorer" and "Go, Diego, Go" when she bought them a DVD titled "Nickelodeon All-Star Sports Day." NY Daily News / Getty Images Candice Connor says a Long Island Toys R Us store sold her a kid-friendly DVD that turned out to be an ...

5 Held in Alleged Terror Plot Against Danish Newspaper

Police arrested today five people in Denmark and Sweden who are suspected of plotting what authorities called "an imminent terror attack" against a Danish newspaper that published cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad. Danish intelligence chief Jakob Scharf said in a statement that the suspects "must be considered militant Islamists with relations to international terror networks," The New York Times reported. The suspects were planning to raid the offices of the Jyllands-Posten newspaper in Copenhagen and "kill as many as possible of the persons present," Scharf said. Violent protests ...

South African President Sues Over Political Cartoon

(Dec. 14) -- The president of South Africa has filed a defamation lawsuit over a 2008 newspaper cartoon depicting him unzipping his pants and preparing to rape a Lady Justice figure. President Jacob Zuma said in court papers that the political cartoon published in the Sunday Times of South Africa hurt his reputation and humiliated and degraded him, the BBC said. His lawyer and spokesman did not comment on the lawsuit. A lawyer for the paper was questioned why the lawsuit was being filed now. "We are surprised to receive this almost two years down the track," Sunday Times attorney Eric van ...

Disney's 'Tangled' Takes On the Serious Issue of Emotional Child Abuse

Disney's 'Tangled' Takes On the Serious Issue of Emotional Child Abuse

A week or so ago, thousands of Facebook users changed their identifying photos to cartoon characters in a vague attempt to "raise awareness" of child abuse. Ironically, at the same time a new hit movie was using animation to focus on the same subject in a more sophisticated manner. The movie? Disney's "Tangled." No kidding. Slipped inside the gorgeous images, entertaining songs and fairy-tale narrative is a clear-eyed look at the way predatory abusers maintain control of their victims. The villain may be Disney's skin-crawlingly nastiest because her evil is so un-magically human. [SPOILER ...

Facebook Profile Picture Meme: From Cartoons to Pedophiles [TIMELINE]

(Dec. 6) -- The Facebook profile cartoon meme is on a viral tear. The campaign encourages users to update their Facebook profile pictures to classic cartoon characters and has evolved from a harmless attempt at creating a nostalgic meme into, according to unconfirmed reports that don't make a lot of sense, an organized effort by pedophiles across the Internet seeking to connect with children on Facebook. Sound confusing? The meme has left many Facebook users scratching their heads. So Surge Desk sifted through the reports and offers some insight with this timeline documenting the cartoon ...

Cartoon Character Facebook Meme: I'm Bambi. Or Not.

Cartoon Character Facebook Meme: I'm Bambi. Or Not.

I'm Bambi. I'd like to be, anyway. But it doesn't take much to bring out the Tasmanian Devil in me. Yesterday ABC News reported on the new meme sweeping Facebook. People are replacing their profile pictures with a childhood favorite cartoon character. According to knowyourmeme.com, the cartoon character game started three weeks ago in Greece and Cyprus. The original plan was to remove all pictures of humans from Facebook, but that meme morphed into yet another "awareness" game, similar to the bra color (breast cancer) and purse (female empowerment) games months ago. This time the good cause ...

A Look at the World's Stupidest Comics

A Look at the World's Stupidest Comics

(Sept. 29) -- Comic book fans and collectors usually focus on titles that were successful, artistically valid or of historical importance. Rarely do they focus on those that are, well, stupid. That's left the door wide open for Shaindle Minuk and her hubby, David Merrill, who for more than five years have been showcasing the lamest, silliest and dumbest characters and stories from comics past on a website fittingly called "Stupid Comics." MisterKitty.org Back in the mid-1960s, Dell Publishing decided to exploit the popularity of monsters and superheroes by turning Count Dracula into a ...

US Cartoon of Mexican Flag Draws Ire

US Cartoon of Mexican Flag Draws Ire

(Sept. 4) -- An American cartoonist's rendition of the Mexican flag is causing controversy south of the border, where Mexicans say it's offensive to taint their national symbol with images of drug violence. Political cartoonist Daryl Cagle's drawing, which ran on the front page of several Mexican newspapers this week, shows what's normally a regal-looking eagle at the center of Mexico's flag riddled with bullets and bleeding. It's a reference to the drug wars that have riled Mexico and left more than 28,000 people dead there in less than four years. "Editorial cartoonists look for readily ...
