The Strangest, Most Far-Out Photos of 2010

By  Lee Speigel - AOL News

It's that time of year when thoughts turn to holiday bargains, family get-togethers, peace on Earth and, hopefully, good will to all. It's also time to look back at stunning, unusual and downright far-out images of people, places and oddities captured in 2010. Think of AOL Weird News as your one-stop shop to read about and view the most striking and often bizarre images to be seen anywhere. 2010 will be remembered for many newsworthy events, but some of the items that we at AOL News were especially moved by included things like bullfighter Julio Aparicio's face-goring moment, or those naked ...

Woman Arrested in Christmas Tree Attack

On Christmas Eve, some people deck the halls -- others apparently deck their folks. Police in Connecticut say Francheska Terrero attacked her parents with a Christmas tree early on Dec. 24. At around 12:30 a.m., West Hartford police received a call from a mother who claimed her 19-year-old daughter had hurled a tannenbaum at her father, NBCConnecticut.com reports. ...

Chefs Battle Over World's Tallest Chocolate Christmas Tree

Chefs Battle Over World's Tallest Chocolate Christmas Tree

A chocolate arms race is heating up this holiday season as two French chocolatiers vie for recognition as creators of the world's tallest chocolate Christmas tree. The Yuletide rivalry began in 2007 when chef Alain Roby, 54, constructed a 22-foot-tall chocolate Christmas tree for a holiday display in a Hong Kong shopping center. Though the work was never submitted to Guinness for recognition, it nonetheless stood beside a vertical banner that proudly declared it a "New World Record." It wasn't the first of Roby's chocolate-themed feats. The French-born pastry chef at the Hyatt Regency in ...

Awful Christmas Gift? Learn to Love It Through Hypnosis

Awful Christmas Gift? Learn to Love It Through Hypnosis

Everyone is bound to unwrap an awful gift or two on Christmas, but your reaction to that gaudy reindeer sweater from grandma doesn't have to be as bad as the gift itself. According to Australian comedy hypnotist Matthew Hale, there's a way to use self-hypnosis to elicit a natural, happy reaction from yourself during the Christmas gift exchange -- even if the present you're unwrapping is a nose hair trimmer, a scale or something equally offensive. Hale, who's been a traveling stage hypnotist for years, said his "Christmas happiness technique" is quite simple. In fact, with the right focus ...

Diamonds, Pearls Festoon Abu Dhabi's $11 Million Christmas Tree

Diamonds, Pearls Festoon Abu Dhabi's $11 Million Christmas Tree

Money doesn't grow on trees, but that didn't stop a hotel in the United Arab Emirates from decking out a Christmas tree with $11 million in decorations. In an over-the-top display of holiday opulence already acknowledged as an "overload" by the hotel management, staff at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi covered a 43-foot-tall fake evergreen with jewelry, pearls, emeralds, sapphires and more than 180 diamonds. Called the "most expensive Christmas tree ever" by hotel general manager Hans Olbertz when it was put up last week, the arbor was supposed to make headlines by besting a $10.8 million ...

Opinion: Top 10 Gift Ideas for Wall Street Fat Cats

(Dec. 3) -- It's the most ... wonderful time ... of the year. And the most frantic and anxious and mind numbing and expensive. The rewarding part is my ongoing seasonal side job as a lumpy elfin holiday gift consultant, where it is an honor and a privilege to be able to pass along some hot tips for this year's Christmas shopping lists. None of which involves surplus uranium tailings from sales to the Iranians. More than a few of us are still struggling to climb out of financial holes so deep we're being tickled by the tendrils of redwood roots, but we're not that difficult to shop for. Dollar ...

5 Facts About This Year's Rockefeller Center Tree

(Nov. 30) -- Oh Christmas tree! The holiday season is upon us already, and New York's Rockefeller Center is getting ready for its annual Christmas tree lighting tonight. Here are a few facts about the city's most iconic Christmas celebration: 1. It's big This year's tree, a Norway spruce harvested from Putnam County, N.Y., measures 74 feet. The tallest Rockefeller tree was 100 feet, in 1999. Still, Manhattan isn't the best place for truly gigantic trees -- in 2007, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, played host to a 161-foot-tall Christmas tree. Christmas Caroling Tradition Pioneered by Drunks

(Nov. 28) -- Christmas caroling has long been a favorite tradition of church groups, elderly choirs and children, but did you know that the first groups of carolers were nothing but a bunch of rowdy drunks? That's the tune from David McKillop, senior vice president of programming for the History Channel, who recently talked to AOL News about the network's upcoming holiday special, "The Real Story of Christmas," premiering Nov. 29 at 9 p.m. ET. The TV special examines the surprising historical origins of our most bizarre Christmas customs, including why some of us go door to door singing ...
