Woman, Dead Since Christmas, Found Amid Trash in Home

For three months, the adult son of Cecylia Opilka lived in their Chicago townhouse with her corpse. Her decomposing body was entombed within the garbage that filled the home almost to the ceiling, police said. After being called to the residence by neighbors reporting a strong stench, city workers could barely open the front door because of the piles of trash, they said. Opilka, 80, apparently died of heart disease, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said, and police said her son told investigators she died on Christmas Day. Ronald Opilka, 43, was arrested after the gruesome ...

Hundreds of people may have been exposed to hepatitis A when they received Christmas Day communion at a Catholic church on New York's Long Island. Nassau County Health Department officials say anyone who attended the 10:30 a.m. or noon services at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Massapequa on Dec. 25 may have been exposed to the virus, which is not as dangerous as hepatitis B or C but can cause severe flu-like symptoms. Officials won't release the name of the person who tested positive for the virus, but they say it was a clergy member. They are offering vaccines to people who attended the two ...

Secret Santa Pays Widow's Electric Bill

Secret Santa Pays Widow's Electric Bill

Just like good little girls and boys around the world, the employees of Socorro Electric Cooperative start looking for Santa come December. When she arrived this holiday season, she was even more generous than usual. A female customer who prefers anonymity drops by the New Mexico electric company every Christmastime and donates $100 towards the account of a struggling elderly customer behind on his or her payments. Employees of the company pick out the recipient; Secret Santa never sees them, and they never find out who she is. When Santa arrived for her annual donation, employees told her ...

Bad Santa Update: Santa Cleared in RI Bar Robbery

Police in Rhode Island say Santa Claus can come to town -- without facing the risk of arrest. Days after a bartender claimed she had been robbed at gunpoint by a man in a Santa Claus suit in East Providence, the pub employee reportedly admitted the holiday heist was a hoax. East Providence Yacht Club bartender Christal Johnson, 37, surrendered to police on Thursday and faces charges of filing a false police report, according to AZCentral.com. Johnson allegedly placed the initial 911 call on Dec. 19, claiming a man dressed like Kris Kringle entered the bar around 7 p.m., then reached into ...

Retailers Roll Out Sales as Snow Hits East Coast

ATLANTA -- An East Coast snowstorm put a damper on after-Christmas shopping Sunday. But shoppers across the rest of the country searched clearance racks and spent gift cards in the afterglow of the best holiday season for retailers since 2007. Blizzard warnings stretched from New Jersey to Maine. Forecasters expected up to 20 inches of snow in Philadelphia and Boston and up to 16 inches in New York City. "The forecast will tend to keep (shoppers) at home. It's not the best day for shopping," said Scott A. Bernhardt, chief operating officer at weather research firm Planalytics. The storm had ...

HONOLULU -- President Barack Obama spent a quiet Christmas in Hawaii Saturday, a rare bit of privacy for one of the world's most scrutinized men. The president is staying at a luxurious oceanfront home in Kailua with his wife, Michelle, and daughters Malia and Sasha. The first family celebrated Christmas with a small circle of friends and family, including some of Obama's childhood friends and the president's sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, who lives here on Oahu, the island where Obama was born and spent much of his childhood.
