Dale Streisand, 57, lived in the U.S. until a year ago, when he moved to the Philippines after getting married. Last August he submitted a request to the Israeli government to "make aliyah," meaning, literally, "to ascend." He told the Israeli newspaper Haaretz that he had been thinking of moving to Israel for many years but decided to take the plunge now because his wife is pregnant and he ...

Why's my favorite amendment so nervous? The 14th Amendment has always been on the hot seat. This Reconstruction-era amendment, adopted in 1868, gave blacks a path to citizenship, made the Bill of Rights applicable to states, and desegregated schools in the 1950s. Now, new controversies are brewing. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia said in an interview recently published in California Lawyer that the 14th Amendment does not guarantee equal rights to women, gays and lesbians. In 1868, when the 39th Congress was debating and ultimately proposing the 14th Amendment, I don't think anybody ...
(Oct. 15) -- Think the people looking at your Facebook page just happen to share your interest in Quentin Tarantino movies? Maybe, but if you're applying for citizenship, it could be a government agent trying to cybersnoop on your daily activities. The Department of Homeland Security has been mining online social networking sites to detect citizenship fraud, according to government documents released by a nonprofit civil liberties group. The documents also show that DHS monitored social networking data to look for potential violent incidents during the inauguration of President Barack Obama. ...
(Sept. 21) -- As Congress prepares to re-initiate the stalled immigration reform debate this week, one very personal immigration issue looks poised to hit the president close to home. President Barack Obama's aunt, Zeituni Onyango, says she's done nothing wrong by illegally living in the United States for years and is therefore deserving of amnesty. "If I come as an immigrant, you have the obligation to make me a citizen," Onyango, 58, told Boston's WBZ news. In her first interview since Obama was elected president, Onyango described how she came to America in 2000 from her native Kenya, ...

FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 29) -- U.S. Senate candidate Rand Paul is stirring it up again, this time by saying he opposes citizenship for children born in the U.S. to parents who are illegal immigrants. Paul, who a week ago won the GOP primary, told a Russian TV station in a clip circulating on political Web sites Friday that he wants to block citizenship to those children. "We're the only country I know that allows people to come in illegally, have a baby, and then that baby becomes a citizen," Paul told RT, an English-language station, shortly after his win over GOP establishment candidate Trey ...
That's what they're doing over here in the U.K. On Monday, Immigration Minister Phil Woolas unveiled a controversial new government proposal calling for a points-based test for all immigrants wishing to become British citizens. ...
Freshman Congressman Bill Posey (R-FL) has introduced a bill in the House that would require future presidential candidates to submit a birth certificate to prove that they are natural-born citizens in order to qualify to run for the office. Rep. Posey says that the bill is not aimed at President Barack Obama, who continues to be the subject of rumors about the circumstances of his birth, but is intended to remove all doubt surrounding future presidents.Posey cited the cries of illegitimacy that greeted President Bush after the disputed election of 2000 and the conspiracy theories about ...
One of the stranger stories to come out of this year's election was the widely e-mailed claim that Barack Obama was ineligible to run for president because he was not actually born on U.S. soil. Our constitution, you see, requires that our presidents be "natural-born" citizens. John McCain, of course, was born in Panama, though, because that event took place on a U.S. military base, it passes constitutional muster. The unfounded, conspiratorial charge that Obama was hiding his birth certificate got a whole lot of people who were already upset at Obama even more upset. Call it the bitter icing ...
