The state officially announced the change in policy last week, making New York one of the few states to grant the private visits for gay and lesbian inmates in legally recognized same-sex partnerships. Although the policy will directly affect a relatively small number of people, advocates for same-sex marriage say it's an important step toward full equality for gay and lesbian couples. "This is a recognition of same-sex couples as families," Molly McKay of Marriage ...
HONOLULU - The Hawaii Legislature approved a bill on Wednesday allowing civil unions for same-sex couples, sending the measure to the governor, who has said he will sign it into law. Democratic Gov. Neil Abercrombie's office said he intends to sign the bill within 10 days, and civil unions would begin Jan. 1, 2012. Eugene Tanner, AP Siobhan Ni Dhonacha, left, gives her partner, Kristin Bacon, right, a kiss on the cheek after Hawaii's Legislature voted to legalize civil unions for same-sex couples. "I have always believed that civil unions respect our diversity, protect people's ...
After much thought, Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle says she found her state's civil unions benefits bill to be "essentially same-sex marriage by another name." So on the final day allowed for her to sign the legislation into law or veto it, she chose the latter. Lingle, a Republican, said Tuesday, "There has not been a bill that I have contemplated more or an issue I have thought about more deeply" in nearly two terms as governor, the Associated Press reported. "But I have been open and consistent in my opposition to same-sex marriage." The rejected legislation granted gay men and lesbian couples ...
(Dec. 3) - In the immediate aftermath of the passage of California's Proposition 8 last fall -- where voters amended the state's constitution to recognize only marriages between one man and one woman -- there was a lot of finger-pointing in the gay community, but no bloodletting. Leaders of all the major gay organizations kept their jobs, including the leader of the one organization dedicated to promoting gay marriage and the head of the leading gay rights group in the Golden State. Well, Patrick Sammon, head of Log Cabin Republicans, did announce his retirement, but he was resigning for ...
Here's a repugnant ad from a group of uber-whiny actors who are "afraid" to grant equality to gay people. Luckily, we don't need them. The rights already exist, all we need to do is recognize them. All through the ad, lightning flashes from the dark, gay storm clouds, but doggone it if it doesn't miss every time. Is the RNC chair in witness protection or something? I was perturbed, yesterday, that White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs hadn't heard about Steele's comments regarding civil unions. While covering CPAC today, I asked everyone I spoke to about Steele's pronouncement. Here's what I got:In fact, the only person here who knows about Steele's declaration of war on civil unions is Captain Ed Morrissey. We talked about it on his show earlier, and here's what he had to say: ...
I had a chance to briefly interview Joe Wurzelbacher, aka Joe the Plumber, here yesterday, and that's one of the questions I asked him. Before I get to that interview, however, I want to make one thing absolutely clear: Joe the Plumber is a genuinely nice, sweet guy. I say this, not just out of some sense of fairness, or a desire for balance, but because he is remarkably nice. Here's an example. I shot a little bit of video before our interview, first of Joe signing books on the convention floor, and then in the interview room. One of the hotel staff told Joe how much her husband loves him, ...
At today's White House press briefing, the subjects were the economy, the economy, Iraq, and the economy. In between all of that, I got to ask my first question as a White House reporter. I asked Robert Gibbs if the President has any actions planned in support of civil unions, given RNC chairman Michael Steele's attack Tuesday on extending the right to same-sex couples.Gibbs responded that he hadn't heard the remarks, so was unable to respond. I read the quote to him, and later asked if he could get a reaction from the President.I'm not sure what to make of this. Either Steele, civil unions, ...
