Clowns Without Borders Brings the Best Medicine to Stricken Areas

Clowns Without Borders Brings the Best Medicine to Stricken Areas

As an aid worker, Tim Cunningham has been around: South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Mexico, Brazil, Haiti. But when he went to those places, he didn't set broken legs, repair buildings or win converts. He did, however, put 20 ping-pong balls in his mouth at once. Cunningham is a volunteer with Clowns Without Borders, an international organization that puts on clown shows in disaster areas around the world. Their mission is to give children and adults in disaster areas psychological relief along with other aid effort. They can't measure their accomplishments in pounds of smiles or liters of ...

Want to Run Away With the Circus? PBS Will Show You How

(Nov. 3) -- From escaping troubled pasts to fulfilling childhood dreams, there are many reasons people run away with the circus. Capturing every moment of it on film, however, may be a new one. When Maro Chermayeff and Jeff Dupre, creators and producers of the new PBS series "Circus," set off to spend 11 months with the Big Apple Circus during the 2008-2009 season, they intended to give viewers an experience unlike anything they would find under the tent. The New York-based Big Apple Circus is a one-ring show where no seat is farther than 50 feet away from the performers. With "Circus," that ...

Angry Clowns: Don't Call Washington Politics 'a Circus'

Angry Clowns: Don't Call Washington Politics 'a Circus'

(Oct. 29) -- You can call Washington a mess. You can call it a farce. But please don't call it a circus. Clowns, jugglers, carnies and other performers making their living under the big top are frustrated by the state of American politics, but they say it's unfair to compare their business to what's going on inside the Beltway. "If you look at the history of the American circus, you'll find that it's one of the most efficient and well-run industries," says Keith Nelson, also known as Kinko the Clown of the Bindlestiff Family Circus, a New York City-based group that has traveled the world. ...

Tila Tequila Attacked By Clown Men, Or Why Glass Is Banned at Gathering of the Juggalos

(Aug. 16) -- The Insane Clown Posse's "Gathering of the Juggalos" is in the news, as tends to happen to a festival when its festival-goers pelt Tila Tequila with, according to Ms. Tequila, rocks, bottles and feces. A video appears to support her account, and pictures show her bloodied and wounded. For those of you unfamiliar with the Insane Clown Posse, congratulations! You have managed to keep your cultural intake commendably ICP-free. Also, you probably have some questions about this rap group and its fans, known colloquially as Juggalos. Surge Desk is here to answer them. Really? There's ...

Run Away With the Circus: Ringling Bros. Holds Clown College Auditions

Run Away With the Circus: Ringling Bros. Holds Clown College Auditions

(Aug. 3) -- This could very well be my last article for AOL News. Because I might be running away with the circus. That's because I, along with 16 others, attended the New York City auditions for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College, held Friday under the big circus tent at Coney Island. It kicked off a nationwide search for Ringling's next group of clowns, which continues this week in San Francisco and Dallas. All of us clown hopefuls were asked to show up as ourselves -- no costumes, makeup, red noses or big shoes were necessary. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey There ...

Clown Aids Tornado Recovery Efforts at Barnum Museum

(July 21) -- Last month a freak tornado struck the historic Barnum Museum in Bridgeport, Conn., causing damage to both the building and the exhibits. Starting Thursday, it's responding in a way one might expect of such a museum: by clowning around. Literally. Renowned clown Joe Barney is helping the recovery efforts by running a series of workshops through the end of this month at the museum's gallery event space, which was not affected by the storm. Funds raised from the programs will help replace lost revenue incurred during the museum's closing in the days immediately following the ...

Clowns Entertain Barnum Museum With $10,000 Gift

(July 6) -- Clowns have a special way of either making people laugh or scaring the bejeezus out of them. But on Monday there was nothing but smiles at the Barnum Museum in Bridgeport, Conn., when a pair of circus performers showed up with a $10,000 gift. The money was presented by Feld Entertainment, producers of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, in honor of P.T. Barnum's 200th birthday Monday. Barnum Museum The Barnum Museum in Bridgeport, Conn., received a $10,000 donation from Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey in honor of P.T. Barnum's 200th birthday. The funds are intended to ...
