Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!A century and a half after the opening shots of the U.S. Civil War, nearly four in 10 Southerners say they still sympathize with the Confederacy. That's according to a new CNN poll released on the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, when Union soldiers raised a U.S. flag over Fort Sumter in South Carolina and the opening shots of the war rang out. The poll's results reveal that the war that divided the nation for four years still divides American public opinion today. In the South, 38 percent of respondents said they sympathize with the Confederacy, which lost the bloody war. ...
A new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll confirms what other pulse trackers are finding of late: President Barack Obama's popularity is on the rise. In the latest poll, 53 percent of Americans say that they approve of the way the president is doing his job, 41 percent said they disapprove and 6 percent said they were not sure. Just one month ago, the same poll found that Obama's approval rating stood at 45 percent, while 48 percent of those surveyed said they disapproved of his job performance. The WSJ/NBC poll is not the only one showing a numbers bump for the president. Polls conducted by ...
(Nov. 4) -- On your marks, get set...prognosticate! Though the dust is still settling on the 2010 midterm elections, pollsters are already at work sizing up the impact of the Republican electoral landslide on the still hypothetical races to come in 2012. According to a new CNN/Opinion research poll, President Obama may be looking at a first term ouster if one of two likely Republican challengers decide to run against him. Were the election were held today, Mike Huckabee would beat Obama by a not-inconsiderable margin of 52-44 percent and Mitt Romney would best the president by a margin of ...
(Aug. 12) -- The incoming tide shows no signs of turning. On Thursday, U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn Walker ruled that legally recognized marriages of gay and lesbian couples living in California can resume on Aug. 18, the Los Angeles Times reported. Walker's directive comes after the state's governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and its attorney general, Jerry Brown, each filed motions to allow same-sex marriages to once again be performed in the Golden State. Following Walker's ruling against Proposition 8, supporters of the amendment to California's Constitution, which defined marriage as ...
Republicans and other critics of health care overhaul have seized on poll numbers reflecting public opposition and unease to accuse President Obama and congressional Democratic leaders of trying to ram through a measure that Americans don't want. But but these snapshots of public opinion aren't necessarily good indicators of how voters will feel later about the legislation and what impact it will have on next year's midterm elections, opinion experts say. ...
Whether or not Tuesday's voting turns out to be a referendum on President Obama, people are already making it clear how they feel about his job performance one year after his election. Obama has a 54 percent approval rating in a new CNN poll, nearly matching the 53 percent of the vote he got last November. What's changed in a year is that he's gained popularity among liberals and lost it among conservatives. And while the president remains above 50 percent in overall approval, most of the Americans CNN surveyed don't like the way he's dealt with such key issues as unemployment, health care ...
Sarah Palin and Levi Johnston, the father of her grandchild, are taking shots at each other just as speculation about her presidential aspirations is on the rise. After CBS' "Early Show" ran the first of a two-part interview with Johnston on Wednesday, Palin issued a statement scolding the network for giving him "a forum to propagate lies" and denying his claim that she often called her youngest son Trig -- who has Down syndrome -- her "retarded baby." Bill Roth, Anchorage Daily News / MCT Despite the dirt being dished by Levi Johnston and a survey that shows most Americans think she's ...
