Calif., Ore. Sustain Most Damage From Tsunami

CRESCENT CITY, Calif. -- The warnings traveled quickly across the Pacific in the middle of the night: An 8.9-magnitude earthquake in Japan spawned a deadly tsunami, and it was racing east Friday as fast as a jetliner. Sirens blared in Hawaii. The West Coast pulled back from the shoreline, fearing the worst. People were warned to stay away from the beaches. Fishermen took their boats out to sea and safety. The alerts moved faster than the waves, giving millions of people across the Pacific Rim hours to prepare. In the end, the damage was mainly to harbors and marinas in California and ...

Six Things You Probably Didn't Know About the Oil Spill

WASHINGTON -- Of the tens of thousands of people who worked to clean up the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, many had competing loyalties and agendas. Unified, they were not. Complicating matters, local, state and federal officials felt enormous pressure to avoid being seen as in cahoots with BP. Because the federal government's response was slow off the mark, President Barack Obama got much of the blame. In the Oil Spill Commission's final report, the following excerpts from "Chapter Five: Response and Containment," give a first look at some of what went on behind the scenes: 1. The Myth of ...

Rough Seas for Ship Being Towed in Bering Sea

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Dec. 5) -- A cargo ship that broke down in Alaska's Aleutian Islands while carrying canola seeds and nearly a half-million gallons of fuel oil continued its slow journey to a safe harbor Sunday as a tug boat pulled it through rough seas and up to 25-foot waves. The 738-foot Golden Seas with 20 crew members aboard was expected to reach Dutch Harbor, 275 miles away, sometime Tuesday. U.S. Coast Guard / AP The Golden Seas, here on Friday, is expected to reach Dutch Harbor, Alaska, on Tuesday, the U.S. Coast Guard said. Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Dana Warr said the tug ...

Golden Seas, Ship Filled With Canola Oil, Adrift Near Alaska

Golden Seas, Ship Filled With Canola Oil, Adrift Near Alaska

(Dec. 3) -- This could be a slightly different kind of oil spill. The U.S. Coast Guard reports that the Golden Seas, a cargo ship carrying canola oil, is adrift in Alaska's Bering Sea and could run aground, the Anchorage Daily News said. Unfortunately, edible canola oil is not the only thing being transported in the 738-foot ship's hull. The vessel is also said to be carrying diesel fuel (a rather unappetizing thought). En route to try to rescue the foundering ship are two Coast Guard helicopters, a C130 plane and the Coast Guard cutter Alex Haley. Twenty members of the crew are still ...

Carnival Splendor Fire: 4 Other Cruise Ship Horrors

(Nov. 9) -- Just a push in the right direction, thanks. Or a pull, rather. A Carnival Cruise Lines ship that drifted off the coast of Southern California is being towed back to shore after an engine room fire caused the 113,000 ton vessel to lose power. The Carnival Splendor, carrying approximately 3,300 guests and 1,100 staff, was en route to a seven day cruise through the Mexican Riviera. The ship is expected to reach land in San Diego with the assistance of tugboats by Thursday night. None of the passengers on board were injured and all guests will receive both a refund and equal ...

Coast Guard Recruiting Station Latest Target in Shooting Spree

Coast Guard Recruiting Station Latest Target in Shooting Spree

(Nov. 3) -- A shot fired at a Coast Guard recruiting station in Woodbridge, Va., earlier this week has been connected through ballistics evidence to four other mysterious shootings in the area. Police said one shot was fired at the building at some point late Monday or early Tuesday, damaging but not breaking a window. Nobody was hurt. Whoever is behind the shootings is following a pattern: The targets are all related to the military, the shootings occur late at night or early in the morning, and so far nobody has been harmed in any of them. The attacks began in mid-October when shots were ...

Shots Fired at Coast Guard Recruitment Office in Va.

(Nov. 2) -- Shots were fired at a Coast Guard recruitment center in Virginia in what may have been another attack on military buildings in the D.C. area, police said. No injuries were reported, and the bullets didn't break through the glass into the building, which is thought to have been empty at the time of the shooting Monday night. There were four attacks on military sites last month: one at the Pentagon, two at a Marine Corps museum and another at a Marine Corps recruiting station. Prince William County Police spokeswoman Kim Chinn told reporters that officials weren't sure if the ...

Coast Guard Checks on Discolored Water Near La.

NEW ORLEANS (Oct. 23) -- The Coast Guard said Saturday that an area of discolored water near a Mississippi River pass south of New Orleans appears to be an algae bloom, but another spot 10 miles away could be oil. Jeff Hall, spokesman for the Unified Area Command, said tests could determine if the suspected oil is from the BP spill. The Coast Guard sent two flights over the West Bay area near Venice on Saturday. Two boats also went out to check the waters. Hall told The Associated Press that tests will be done Monday on water samples from an area where a marine investigator believes there's ...

Coast Guard Looks for 6 Missing NJ Sport-Fishermen

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (Oct. 11) -- Six New Jersey men failed to return from a weekend overnight fishing trip, and the Coast Guard was searching for their sport-fishing boat Monday off the coast of Massachusetts, where they might have issued a mayday call. Thomas McDade said his father, Geoffrey, and 26-year-old brother, James, were among the group that left Saturday morning on a trip to catch tuna about 85 miles east of Atlantic City. They were to return Sunday morning and when they weren't home by the evening, Thomas McDade said his mother called authorities. The search for the 32-foot ...

4 Most Glaring Errors Cited by Obama's Oil Spill Panel

(Oct. 7) -- Scientists describe the official response to BP's Gulf of Mexico oil disaster as a giant science experiment carried out in real time since it was the first in U.S. history involving a deep-water oil rig. Yet the preliminary assessment released this week by the Oil Spill Commission, which was appointed by President Barack Obama back in May, does not look kindly upon the makeshift efforts of government officials or the U.S. Coast Guard. In response, the Obama administration defended itself for having "significantly mitigated the impact of the spill" by using all available ...
