Missing Cobra Hits the Big Apple; Thousands Following on Twitter

It's no wonder the escaped Egyptian cobra hasn't been found at the Bronx Zoo: She's having too good of a time taking on Manhattan. In reality, the zoo says it may be weeks before the pencil-thin, 20-inch venomous asp comes out of hiding. She's believed to be confined to the zoo's World of Reptiles building after slipping out of her enclosure several days ago. But while the hunt for the cobra continues at the zoo, a witty Twitter writer has imagined her young life on the town. Under the handle BronxZoosCobra, the "snake" began tweeting Monday, starting off with some thanks to the ...

Poisonous Cobra Still on the Loose at Bronx Zoo

A venomous Egyptian cobra that slipped out of its home at the Bronx Zoo in New York City is still missing this morning and is believed to be trapped inside the zoo's now-shuttered World of Reptiles exhibit. The zoo closed the reptile house indefinitely Friday when staff members discovered that the adolescent cobra was not in its off-exhibit enclosure. "Based on our knowledge of the natural history and behavior of snakes, we know they seek closed-in spaces and are not comfortable in open areas," the zoo said on its website. "We are confident that the snake, about 20 inches long, is contained ...

Dangerous Cobra Disappears at Bronx Zoo

NEW YORK - A poisonous cobra has vanished from an enclosure outside public view at the Bronx Zoo, and its Reptile House remained closed Sunday as a precaution while zoo workers searched for the missing reptile. While the roughly 20-inch-long Egyptian cobra - a highly venomous species of snake - has been unaccounted for since Friday afternoon, zoo officials say they're confident it hasn't gone far and isn't in a public area. Its enclosure was in an isolation area not open to visitors. Salah Malkawi, Getty Images An Egyptian cobra rears its head in Abu Rawwash, Egypt, in a March ...

Wisconsin Protesters: Can You Spare Some Solidarity?

Wisconsin Protesters: Can You Spare Some Solidarity?

Sorry, Wisconsin protesters. I want to root for unions. But I can't. That's because they're only for the working man and woman. They don't seem to care about the unemployed and the legions of Americans forced into part-time work. As depicted in the British comedy "I'm All Right Jack" -- I'm all right, and to hell with everyone else -- unions are narrowly focused on union workers. That's the hidden reason sympathy has declined. A lot has happened to the working man and woman in the last 40 years, and none of it good. Unions have not been paying attention. Unions brag it was they who put an ...

Guinness Reject Spends 121 Days With 27 Puff Adders, 3 Cobras

(Sept. 13) -- A British carpenter has attempted to slither his way into the record books by spending four months in a room filled with poisonous snakes only to be rejected by Guinness. David Jones, 45, spent 121 days in a tiny 16-by-13-foot room at the Chameleon Village Reptile Center in Johannesburg, South Africa, with two black mambas, two green mambas, seven boomslang, 27 puff adders and three cobras as his only roommates. It wasn't easy, but it was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for this snake lover from Sussex, England. Barcroft / Fame Pictures Think you've got bad roommates? ...

Senate Nixes Unemployment Extension

Senate Nixes Unemployment Extension

The Senate failed to move forward on a bill to extend unemployment benefits through November as well as several expiring tax breaks and spending programs. Heartburn over deficit spending left Democrats well short of the 60 votes needed to consider the bill. The vote was 52-45. A block of 12 centrist Democrats broke party ranks Wednesday to vote against the "tax extenders" bill, which used $80 billion in deficit spending to pay for the legislation. Among the "no" votes were Sens. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.), Mary Landrieu (D-La.), Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), and Bill Nelson (D-Fla.). Democrats say ...

Massive To-Do List Grows As Senate Health Debate Stalls

Massive To-Do List Grows As Senate Health Debate Stalls

President Obama has made health care reform his top legislative priority on Capitol Hill. But several time-sensitive and controversial measures are threatening to derail the Democrats' plans for health care by year's end unless the Senate can quickly pass reform legislation and attend to at least a dozen other looming bills within the next several weeks. From appropriations bills that must pass by Dec. 18 to contested portions of the USA Patriot Act, which expire on Dec. 31, to the estate tax, which will drop from 45 percent to zero on Jan. 1, the items remaining on the Senate's agenda would ...
