Retired Air Force Major Predicts UFO Sightings at Royal Wedding

The upcoming royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton is expected to be viewed by more than a billion people worldwide -- and possibly a few extraterrestrials, according to at least one former military officer. George Filer, a retired Air Force major, runs the National UFO Center and says it's common to see UFOs around important events. "The craft seem to have an interest in anything important," Filer told AOL News. "They've been sighted recently over Libya and near the Japanese tsunami." Happy 100th Birthday to the 1911 .45 Pistol, Our Gun of Choice

Happy 100th Birthday to the 1911 .45 Pistol, Our Gun of Choice

This year marks the 100th "birthday" of one of America's most successful and culturally impactive political tools: the 1911 .45 semi-automatic pistol. Yet this is not just a story about a gun. Though, of course, this story stars and starts with that gun. Or rather, our need for it that emerged when U.S. armed forces fought Muslim insurgents on Asian turf that most Americans have trouble finding on a map. As most of us remember -- especially fans of Mark Twain and Rudyard Kipling -- from 1899-1913, the United States fought the Philippine-American War for control of those Pacific islands. In ...

'Call of Duty: Black Ops' Sells Record $360 Million in 24 Hours

(Nov. 11) -- The numbers are in, and "Call of Duty: Black Ops" has beaten not only the previous installment in the series and James Cameron's "Avatar," but everything else as well, earning it the title of biggest entertainment launch of all time. The video game sold 5.6 million units, making it a total of $360 million, in its first 24 hours on sale. Video games have recently penetrated deeper than ever into the mainstream with casual offerings like "FarmVille" on Facebook. But Eric Hirshberg, CEO of "Call of Duty" publisher Activision, says the record sales figures show that the demand for ...

Remembering Theodore Sorensen

By  Paul Wachter - AOL News
Remembering Theodore Sorensen

(Nov. 1) -- Theodore Sorensen, former speechwriter for President John F. Kennedy, died Sunday at 82 from complications from a stroke he suffered a week ago. Sorensen drafted Kennedy's 1961 inaugural speech, in which the president famously said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." Sorensen is also credited with drafting a letter from Kennedy to Soviet leader Nikita Krushchev in 1962 that helped resolve the Cuban missile crisis. The memories from friends and other admirers have begun to pour in. Here's The Atlantic's James Fallows, former ...

Yellow Dirt: Uranium's Legacy in Navajo Country

Yellow Dirt: Uranium's Legacy in Navajo Country

(Sept. 21) -- Yazzie Mesa on the Navajo reservation in Arizona is not nearly as dramatic as the spindly rock spires and sandstone arches in Monument Valley to the west, where classic John Wayne movies were filmed. Nor is it as imposing as Comb Ridge, the sheer-walled mass rising high to its east that slashes through 80 miles of desert in Utah and Arizona. But the relatively unassuming mesa played a vital Cold War role for the U.S. government, supplying uranium for atomic bombs. And to the Navajos who have dwelt for generations at its base, it is the wounded center of their world. Free Press ...

Report: US Vulnerable to Nuclear Attack

Report: US Vulnerable to Nuclear Attack

(July 22) -- The threat of an all-out nuclear exchange between Russia and the United States may be less than it was during the Cold War, but defense experts say decades-long efforts to avoid a possible Armageddon have had a downside: The United States is now woefully unprepared for any kind of nuclear attack. That's the conclusion of an influential Pentagon defense advisory panel, which recently completed a comprehensive review of the nation's ability to respond to and survive a nuclear attack. The panel found that the expertise needed to survive a nuclear attack has atrophied since the end ...

Russians in Spy Exchange Include Hanssen Case Figure

(July 9) -- A former Russian intelligence officer who may have provided information that helped uncover two of the worst spies in U.S. history -- Robert Hanssen and Aldrich Ames -- is among the four Russians swapped for 10 sleeper agents in an elaborate Cold War-style spy swap today. Alexander Zaporozhsky, a decorated former KGB officer who, according to Reuters, may have helped expose the American turncoats, had served seven years of an 18-year sentence on charges of spying for the United States. He was released with three others and flown to Vienna. The Washington Post reported that ...

US and Russian Planes Exchange 14 Spies in Vienna

VIENNA (July 9) -- The U.S. and Russia orchestrated the largest spy swap since the Cold War, exchanging 10 spies arrested in the U.S. for four convicted in Russia in a tightly choreographed diplomatic dance Friday at Vienna's airport. Two planes - one from New York's La Guardia airport and another from Moscow - arrived in Vienna within minutes of each other, parked nose-to-tail at a remote section on the tarmac, then spent about an hour and a half before departing just as quickly. A small bus was seen driving between the two planes. The swap completed, a Russian Emergencies Ministry ...

Opinion: We're Becoming a Nation of Haters

(July 9) -- California Republican Rep. Darrell Issa takes pride in opposing the Obama administration. Democratic Reps. Henry Waxman and Nancy Pelosi played that role when George W. Bush was in office. Keith Olbermann provides a nightly list of "Worst Persons in the World," a personal hate list as much as anything. And Rush Limbaugh's hate rants range from drug addicts to illegal immigrants to, of course, all things liberal. The BP oil disaster spawned hate ranging from The Wall Street Journal to ihatebp.com. There is a trend in America in which we are more and more idolizing people who have ...
