Star-TribuneRepublican Norm Coleman's dim prospects for winning the U.S. Senate trial darkened today as several hundred disputed absentee ballots were finally counted and split strongly for his DFL opponent, Al Franken.Minutes after the ballots were opened for the first time, state elections director Gary Poser counted them, reading off the votes one by one to a hushed courtroom. When he was done, Franken's lead had grown from 225 to 312 votes.Ouch! Norm Coleman is playing the recount rules right. Fight to keep counting when you're ahead, then fight to stop the counting immediately. The big ...
Current status from TwinCities.com: Absentee ballots at issue that may be counted are about 3500. Franken still has a 225 vote lead. 1,000 votes that Coleman agreed to count on Jan 3, Coleman now wants to reconsider and remove them from the vote. Coleman's attorneys want to review the legal status of all 290k votes in light of last Friday's rulings narrowing the types of absentee ballots it would accept for counting. One hitch: It would be impossible as those previously counted absentee ballots have long ago had the envelopes removed. Thus the maneuver is likely to highlight the fundamental ...
Yes, I know it's all Daschle today, but there is still (yes still) a senate race to be decided between Norm Coleman and Al Franken, and Coleman just posted a very big "get" today.AOL:The judges in Minnesota's Senate election trial threw Republican Norm Coleman a lifeline on Tuesday, opening the door to adding nearly 5,000 rejected absentee ballots to a race that Democrat Al Franken leads by just 225 votes. It wasn't a total victory for Coleman, who had wanted the judges to look at about 11,000 such ballots. He also has to prove the absentees were unfairly rejected, and it's likely that Franken ...
ColemanForSenate.com In this example there are two separate ballots, one with the Franken oval filled in, the other with the Coleman oval filled in. In both instances, an "X" covers the oval for both the Senate race and the Presidential race. However, the Board allocated the Franken vote for Franken while the Coleman vote was designated a "no vote."Here's the Franken vote... counted as one for Franken:But if a Coleman voter does the same thing...Then that's obviously an X in there and what the voter meant to do was not vote for anyone. I honestly have no idea how widespread this sort of thing ...
AP: The court said Monday it will weigh whether to stop the sorting and counting of wrongly rejected absentee ballots until clear instructions are handed down. Republican Sen. Norm Coleman petitioned the court to step in after the state board overseeing the recount recommended those ballots be considered last week. Coleman maintains there aren't clear guidelines for the recommendation and could lead to disarray among the 87 counties. Democrat Al Franken made a big push to include absentee ballots in the recount that were improperly set aside. Minnesota has four legal reasons for rejecting an ...
Have we had a Minnesota Recount Update lately? No? Let's fix that. Here's where we stand: All but one precinct has been recounted. Norm Coleman is ahead by 192 votes according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, but the latest is the saga of 133 supposedly missing ballots. Supposedly because one theory is that they were actually run through twice, which is why they have disappeared. But not quite. Officials continued to search for 133 Minneapolis ballots that apparently are missing. And until those ballots are found or judged impossible to locate, the recount won't be over, Secretary of State Mark ...
UPI.comThe Minnesota U.S. Senate contest between incumbent Republican Norm Coleman and Democratic challenger Al Franken is undergoing a recount, with the candidates separated by less than 300 votes out of 2.9 million cast. But a controversial decision by the state's Elections Canvassing Board could end up throwing the election into the lap of the Senate itself, a scholar told Minnesota Public Radio."Ultimately, the Senate has complete authority to determine who was elected," Washington University political scientist Steven Smith told the broadcaster, citing the canvassing board's decision this ...
I've been watching the Minneapolis Star Tribune special site set up to watch the Minnesota Senate recount battle between Republican Norm Coleman and Democrat challenger Al Franken. After starting the recount process with about a 200 vote margin for Coleman and then getting as close as near 100 vote margin, we are now back to 210 votes up for Coleman. And this is with 77% of the vote in. But the challenge battle is also heating up: With only 16,000 of 79,000 ballots left to recount at the start of the day, Stearns County Auditor-Treasurer Randy Schreifels said he was pretty confident things ...
Jesse was on Larry King apparently and told everyone the sad, sad news. He's not running for Senate. And since I broke the speculation, I figured I ought to wrap it up. Hotline's writeup: Surprising no one, ex-MN Gov. Jesse Ventura (I) just told CNN's Larry King that he won't join the MN SEN race now dominated by Sen. Norm Coleman (R) and entertainer Al Franken (D). Squinting into the camera, with his dyed-black hair apparently pulled back in a ponytail, Ventura told King that he's so disgusted with both parties that he doesn't plan to vote for either Barack Obama or John McCain. So ...
