Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! The jokes are already flying as Sarah Palin prepares to embark on a trip to India later this month, and more are surely to come. Will she rock a sari? Perhaps guest star in a Bollywood movie? Or bathe in the Ganges for a photo op? Palin has been invited to give the keynote address, "My Vision of America," at the two-day India Today conclave in New Delhi, an event hosted annually by the magazine since 2002. The March 18-19 event is sponsored by global business heavyweight Aditya Birla Group, a billion-dollar metals company, along with a bevy of industry co-sponsors. The news came in late ...
The Iraqi defector known as "Curveball," who provided the basis for U.S. claims that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, has admitted that he lied to intelligence agencies, a published report says. Rafid Ahmed Alwan al-Janabi told The Guardian newspaper he made up the stories about Saddam's arsenal because he wanted to hurt the Iraqi regime. "I had the chance to fabricate something to topple the regime," al-Janabi told The Guardian in a series of interviews. "I and my sons are proud of that, and we are proud that we were the reason to give Iraq the margin of democracy." The ...
Donald Rumsfeld, known for his tart one-liners as well as his hawkish foreign policy stands, says in a new memoir that he regrets that he did not step down as defense secretary after reports of abuse at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. In "Known and Unknown," Rumsfeld says he wishes he had insisted that President George W. Bush accept his offer to resign after news broke in 2004 of the rough and humiliating treatment of detainees by American jailers. In an account of the book by the New York Times, Rumsfeld blamed the abuses on rogue soldiers -- not any approved policies. But he says that "more ...
WASHINGTON -- Former Secretary of State Colin Powell on Sunday ruled out a return to government service but said he still supports President Barack Obama even though he hasn't yet decided who to vote for in 2012. The highly respected retired general and moderate Republican made waves when he endorsed Democrat Obama in 2008. He told CNN's "State of the Union" that he thought Obama's presidency remains a work in progress and that tough issues such as the economy and unemployment need to be addressed. Powell said he hoped the president would tackle these matters in his State of the Union ...
WASHINGTON (Dec. 1) -- President Barack Obama rallied support for a stalled nuclear treaty from former Secretary of State Colin Powell Wednesday, as Republican lawmakers indicated a greater willingness to ratify the agreement with Russia by the end of the year. Both Obama and Powell warned of grave consequences if the Senate fails to ratify the New START pact, which would reduce how many strategic warheads the United States and Russia could hold and set up a system so each could inspect and verify the other's arsenal. "When you have uncertainty in the area of nuclear weapons, that's a much ...
(Nov. 30) -- Finally, a positive piece of news in the often gloomy world of education in the United States: A study released today suggests that the nation's fight to reduce the number of high school dropouts may be turning a corner. The report shows that the American graduation rate increased from 72 percent in 2002 to 75 percent in 2008. It also says that the number of so-called "dropout factories" -- high schools where only 60 percent or fewer of freshmen make it to senior year -- fell 13 percent over the same time period. In 2002 there were 2,007 dropout factories, compared with 1,746 in ...
Colin Powell, a friend to President Obama yet also a onetime top aide to two Republican presidents, said Obama should have focused on the nation's troubled economy during his first two years in office "to the exclusion of most everything else domestically." Powell told CNN's Larry King the president's party suffered "a real body blow" in the midterm elections, in part because Obama didn't have his priorities straight. "When you're starting out as president, you have to figure out [what] is most important," he said Monday night. He said endorsing Democrat Obama over Republican Sen. John ...
I'm reading "Leadership And Crisis," by Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal. One of the most poignant parts of the book deals with Hurricane Katrina, and then-Congressman Jindal's frustration with how bureaucracy prevented common-sense efforts to save lives. For example, when bureaucrats overruled a local sheriff's decision to allow volunteers to go out in boats to help rescue people (rescuers couldn't go without "proof of insurance and registration for their boats"), Jindal says the sheriff responded by saying: "This is Sheriff Harry Lee. You can come arrest me, and Congressman Jindal's here ...
(Sept. 29) -- The entire country today pretended to be scandalized as another wealthy, prominent Republican politician pushing for harsher immigration enforcement was rocked by accusations that she had knowingly hired an illegal immigrant. Sitting alongside liberal lawyer Gloria Allred, Nicky Diaz Santillan accused her former boss, California Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman, of hiring her to be her nanny and housekeeper even though Whitman knew she was undocumented, and of "exploiting" and "humiliating" her. Back in 2006, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was embarrassed ...
(Sept. 20) -- Retired Gen. Colin Powell wants to make it clear: He doesn't hire illegal immigrants. ...
