Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! It's a brand-new year and many of us have resolved to eat more salad. And keeping that vow may easier than ever, since now there's a way to drink your greens, not just chew them. New Yorker Till Krautkraemer is the founder of MeatWater, a beverage company that creates hearty -- and obviously meaty -- meal supplement drinks in highly unusual flavors like cheeseburger, barbecued chicken wings and Italian sausage. To ring in the new year and toast to a healthier lifestyle, Krautkraemer has just released four new offbeat offerings that are vegan-friendly and devoid of animal ...
Some people do their best scrubbing in the shower; others do their best thinking. Just ask Mark Knudsen, a Michigan-based, self-professed "shower thinker" with a penchant for coming up with great ideas while showering. A couple of years ago, Knudsen's watery brainstorming habit led to something big: the invention of a simple little novelty that helps shower thinkers like himself record their every thought mid-cleansing. After a "splash" of genius in his very own shower, Knudsen created "AquaNotes," a nontoxic, recyclable, waterproof notepad designed to withstand exposure to ...
Young people crave boosts to their self-esteem more than sex, money -- even late-night pizza. That's according to new research by social scientists at Ohio State University and Brookhaven National Laboratory, who surveyed the cravings and motivations of more than 280 college students in two separate projects. They found that the students rated compliments -- like getting praise for doing well on a test -- higher than the rewards of money, sex, eating their favorite food or spending time with friends. "It wouldn't be correct to say that the study participants were addicted to self-esteem," ...
In the days after Barack Obama was elected in 2008, Kevin Hollinshead hoped the president would become a leader reminiscent of Franklin Delano Roosevelt -- capable of steering the country out of a massive economic crisis while taking on his sharpest critics. But Hollinshead, a senior at Colorado State University, now feels that the president has ceded too much to his Republican opposition and failed to live up to the ideals of his campaign. "They've decided that he's public enemy No. 1, and they'll do whatever it takes to ruin him," Hollinshead said of Republicans in Congress. "And rather ...
(Nov. 24) -- Next time you find yourself dozing off in the middle of a boring movie at home, there's only one logical solution: stuff your face with popcorn -- caffeinated popcorn, to be precise. For the past several months, Amanda Fitch and her husband, Matthew, have been generating quite the buzz from a business they started on a whim right in their own kitchen. Tired of drinking endless energy drinks, coffee and diet soda to stay vitalized throughout their busy day, the twosome experimented with adding caffeine to their favorite snack -- popcorn -- as a little afternoon pick-me-up. What ...
In the current recession, everyone -- students, graduates, blue- and white-collar workers alike -- faces an increasingly competitive job market. College students have always turned to internships, paid or unpaid, for not only the skill development and on-the-job training but also, frankly, for the résumé padding. But a recent article from The New York Times concerning the rise in unpaid internships, and whether such positions are in keeping with state and federal regulatory guidelines, seems to have struck a nerve. "With job openings scarce for young people, the number of unpaid internships ...
