Communications Giants Offer Free Calls to Japan

Responding to the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, AT&T, Comcast, Time Warner, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint are providing free phone calls to the country. "We have seen an increase in the number of calls made by our customers to family, friends and colleagues in Japan who have been touched by the events that occurred earlier today," Time Warner Chairman and CEO Glenn Britt said in a statement Friday. "They are all in our thoughts, and we hope that this program removes a small measure of worry from our customers." Each phone company is presenting the offer for a limited time, with various ...

NBC, Comcast Blend Sports Resources

With their much ballyhooed merger now complete, NBC and Comcast have wasted little time consolidating and organizing their sports resources behind a new management team, the company announced Wednesday. The newly formed NBC Sports Group -- which consists of NBC Sports, Versus, the Golf Channel and 11 Comcast SportsNet channels around the country as well as digital assets -- will be headed by Dick Ebersol, the current chairman of NBC Sports. Ken Schanzer remains as Ebersol's chief deputy in the title of NBC Sports President. Meanwhile, Mark Lazerus, who formerly headed Turner Sports, will ...

Opinion: When Comcast Rules the World

When the Federal Communications Commission approved the Comcast/NBC merger earlier this week, it set off all the usual complaints from all the usual suspects. You should be afraid! You should be mad!! Too much content control under one roof!!! Poppycock. So what if one company owns ... 10 TV and movie production studios (including Universal Pictures), 20 cable channels, 11 regional broadcast TV stations, 15 Telemundo stations (arriba!), nine regional sports cable networks, one regional news cable station (New England Cable News), a whole bunch of websites, two pro sports teams in ...

FCC Approves Comcast-NBC Deal: 5 Questions on the Merger Answered

The Federal Communications Commission voted 4-1 today in favor of a merger between Comcast and NBC Universal, creating a "media powerhouse" that some fear strikes a serious blow to the future of net neutrality. The Justice Department, which is also required to sign off on the merger, approved the plan later in the afternoon. With today's FCC ruling, the deal is expected to close by the end of January. Surge Desk runs down a quick primer on the merger's significance and implications. 1. What makes this ruling important? The Comcast-NBC deal marks the first time that a top-tier cable company ...

Netflix Provider Level 3 Enters Net Neutrality Spat With Comcast

(Nov. 30) -- Net neutrality: still unsolved. Level 3 Communications, a company that delivers Netflix movies and television programs to Web customers, has accused Comcast of imposing an unfair fee on streaming video, the New York Times reported Monday evening. "With this action, Comcast demonstrates the risk of a 'closed' Internet, where a retail broadband Internet access provider decides whether and how their subscribers interact with content," Level 3 chief legal adviser Thomas C. Stortz said in a statement Monday. Comcast countered Level 3's accusations, stating the two companies had held ...

Opinion: Google and Verizon Put the Squeeze on the FCC

(Aug. 13) -- Earlier this week, longtime net neutrality supporter Google teamed up with longtime net neutrality opponent Verizon to offer a proposed framework for the regulation of the Internet. The proposal would prohibit Internet service providers from discriminating on wireline networks -- like cable or DSL -- but would also let ISPs charge some Web content providers more for speedier service. In addition, it would let wireless networks -- such as those that serve iPhones and BlackBerrys -- operate outside of neutrality rules. Both Google and Verizon have business interests that are ...

Reported Exit Deal for Jeff Zucker Reveals the NBC Way: Failure Pays

What's the going price for driving down NBC's ratings? Between $30 and $45 million, it seems. In January, the television network, which is owned by General Electric, paid late-night host Conan O'Brien $32.5 million to leave the network after an ugly feud over "The Tonight Show" spot. Now the New York Post is reporting that NBC is prepared to pay even more to CEO Jeff Zucker, whose three-year tenure at the top spot has been accompanied by tumbling ratings, as part of a generous exit package. Zucker's reported golden parachute is part of a larger deal -- Comcast's bid to take over a majority ...

FCC to Regulate Broadband Internet Providers

FCC to Regulate Broadband Internet Providers

The Federal Communications Commission will reregulate broadband lines to help prevent service providers from dictating how their customers use the Internet. The FCC will regulate Internet lines under rules that currently apply to landline telephone networks, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday. The rules will be used to enforce "network neutrality," regulations that require providers to treat web traffic equally and not slow or block websites. The move is sure to be hailed by consumer advocates who have called on the government to order providers to give equal treatment to all ...

Opinion: The War With Comcast Is Far From Over

(April 26) -- When a federal court killed a Federal Communications Commission order prohibiting Comcast from tampering with its customers' traffic, it was the end of a case I was involved in from the very beginning. But it's not the end of the story. I'm a ham radio operator, a barbershop quartet singer and fan, and a networking expert owing to my employment as a developer of communications products in the high-tech industry. Oddly, all three would converge when I caught my Internet service provider, Comcast Cable, altering my outgoing Internet traffic and preventing me from uploading music ...
