Prolific comic book writer Dwayne McDuffie, who also wrote and produced the animated television series "Justice League Unlimited," has died. Comic Book Resources reported that McDuffie died from complications after undergoing a surgical procedure. In a statement, DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio said: "Dwayne McDuffie left a lasting legacy on the world of comics that many writers can only aspire to. ... The industry has lost a true talent." McDuffie began his comic book career in the 1980s at Marvel. He quickly gained success as a writer and became deeply involved in race issues in the ...
Evil villains on the streets of Lynnwood, Wash., beware: Phoenix Jones has your number. Jones, a heroic "real life superhero," spends most nights patrolling the streets of the city just north of Seattle, and, in all seriousness, helps take a bite out of crime. In a recent tale straight out of a comic book, Jones arrived just in the nick of time to foil a would-be carjacking. "From the right, this guy comes dashing in, wearing this skin-tight rubber, black and gold suit, and starts chasing him away," said the car owner, who identified himself only as Dan. All in a day's work, Jones, armed ...
Brenda Starr -- the original girl reporter -- has lived the life. Glamorous and brave, Starr, with her flowing red hair, basked in an adventurous career and passionate romances long before graphic novels came on the scene. But after 70 years, the original girl reporter is stashing her notebook in the desk and writing "--30--" at the end of her story. The Brenda Starr comic strip is retiring in January, and popular culture will be without a fictional journalism ambassador. Countless female journalists have named Starr as a guiding muse and role model in their careers, myself included. And ...
(Dec. 6) -- Two Canadian writers have taken Shakespeare's most famous characters and put them in a "Lord of the Rings"-type quest, and that has lovers of the Immortal Bard grumbling whether it is to be or not to be. The comic book in question is called "Kill Shakespeare" and features Shakespearean celebs like Hamlet, Othello, and Romeo and Juliet battling it out against Lady MacBeth, Iago and Richard III to see who can find a mysterious wizard named Shakespeare. Although the 12-volume series is a hit, some scholars wonder whether 'tis nobler for vital characters like Hamlet, Richard III and ...
(Nov. 23) -- Just because a mouse has been doused with radiation at a nuclear weapons site doesn't mean that it has acquired superpowers, can shoot laser beams from its eyes and will soon come to subjugate humanity. But at the same time, it's more than a bit unsettling. Workers at a former plutonium-production facility in Hanford, Wash., are hunting for a radioactive mouse after finding polluted droppings. Earlier this month workers also trapped a radioactive rabbit in what is the nation's most contaminated nuclear site, according to The Washington Post. Getty Images A radioactive mouse ...
(Nov. 18) -- Free expression in the digital age faces a major test before the U.S. Supreme Court. Earlier this month, the court heard oral arguments debating the constitutionality of a 2005 California law banning the sale of violent video games to minors. If the nation's high court allows California's law to stand, it would pave the way for future laws curtailing all kinds of interactive expression. In recent years, several states have passed laws barring the sale of violent video games to minors, but courts have found all such laws to violate the First Amendment's free speech guarantee. As ...
(Nov. 10) -- How much could an iconic piece of Superman art fetch on the auction block? Up, up and away above the price for any other piece in history. At least that's the presumption and hope of Stephen Fishler, the co-owner of ComicConnect.com and Metropolis Collectibles, the world's largest vintage comic book dealer. MetropolisComics.com / ComicConnect.com Comic book pioneer Jerry Robinson, who created The Joker, is selling the original art for two iconic covers: One of Superman and one of The Joker. Experts say each picture could fetch millions. He's the man behind an online auction ...
(Nov. 5) -- They're two of the most recognized and beloved characters in American culture -- Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch. But did you know that before they made Sesame Street the most well-known neighborhood in the land, they served in the military? In fact, after the two felt superstars were discharged, they almost worked for Walt Disney as animators and illustrators. Of course, Jim Henson would have had a major problem with this -- so he hired them first. The rest is history. Well, in a manner of speaking anyway. It wasn't the puppets that served our country and almost worked for ...
(Oct. 25) -- Superheroes aren't what they used to be. Superman, 72, is changing his look, making him the latest villain-fighting star to undergo a major makeover in recent years. In a new graphic novel out next month, the iconic hero will be transformed from a clean-shaven, grown man pulsating with testosterone into a skinny 20-year-old still making his way in the world, The New York Post reports. The new, hipster-like hero of the DC Comic novel "Superman: Earth One" is shorter, skinnier and hoodie-wearing, all the better to reflect the changing times of the world in which he lives, says DC ...
