American products have been very popular with consumers in Egypt. Egypt has been one of our most stable trading partners in the Mideast and is the 34th largest export market for U.S. goods. The U.S. goods trade surplus with Egypt was $3.2 billion in 2009, with exports in 2009 of $5.3 billion and imports from Egypt at $2.1 billion. Any time the U.S. enjoys a trade surplus, that's good news for job creation and job retention. More Opinion on AOL ...
(Dec. 16) -- Is it "necessary and proper" for Congress to draft every American into a nationwide health insurance pool? The Obama administration claims it is and will be making this argument in a Florida federal court Thursday after having lost its case in a separate federal court earlier this week. Most non-lawyer Americans must wonder how coercing citizens to buy health insurance could possibly be constitutional. Never before has the federal government claimed the power to force citizens to buy anything from a private party. If Congress can mandate the purchase of insurance, what prevents ...
(Dec. 2) -- With unemployment benefits about to run out for many and Bush tax cuts about to expire for all, putting the brakes on the government's overzealous enforcement of insider trading rules would hardly seem like an economic priority for Congress. But it should be. And here's why. In recent months, the Securities and Exchange Commission has been cracking down on insider trading, but doing it in a way that expands the definition of insider trading so much that it's threatening to undermine confidence and participation in financial markets at the worst possible time. Rising investment ...
NEW YORK (Nov. 27) -- Shoppers crowded stores on Black Friday but spent just a little more than last year on the traditional start of the holiday shopping season, according to data released Saturday by a research firm. Retail spending rose a slight 0.3 percent, to $10.69 billion, compared with $10.66 billion on the day after Thanksgiving last year, according to ShopperTrak. Two factors behind the slim increase, a disappointment following bullish reports from stores Friday, were heavy discounts earlier in November and online shopping, which saw a big increase. Chicago research firm ...
NEW YORK (Nov.26) -- An insider trading case last year that federal authorities said was the biggest ever is providing a recipe for another case that may be even bigger. The current case is largely an extension of work that led to the arrest of Galleon Group founder Raj Rajaratnam in October 2009. The Galleon investigation marked the first time that federal authorities used wiretaps in an insider trading probe. Similarly, wiretaps led to the first arrest in the latest case. Don Ching Trang Chu, a consulting firm executive, was arrested Wednesday for allegedly providing private information ...
(Aug. 23) -- If Washington seems out of ideas on how to get the private-sector jobs machine running again, there's a pretty straightforward reason -- the people in government have virtually no experience in business. In a major departure from prior administrations, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone in the current administration with any real business experience. Even offices such as treasury and commerce secretary, which have traditionally been occupied by successful business people, are occupied by a career central banker (with his own tax-compliance problems) and a lawyer/politician. ...
I'm getting more than a little sick of hearing stories about career politicians and other people in high places who can't follow our laws. I pay my taxes, chances are you do to. I have a nanny for my son who is legal to work in the U.S. and we have her working on the books. So I'm getting a little sick of learning about people who make a whole lot more money than I who can't seem to figure it out. The latest is Obama's pick for secretary of Health and Human Services, Tom Daschle, who just happened to have once served as Democratic Senate Minority Leader. As far as I know, Daschle has no nanny ...
