Zimbabwe's premier conservationist, a 62-year-old man who says he's endured assassination attempts for trying to preserve wildlife in one of Africa's poorest and most repressive countries, can't watch the video showing Bob Parsons, the billionaire CEO of GoDaddy.com, shooting and killing an elephant. "I've seen so many of the atrocities against elephants and other wildlife here that it sickens me to the bottom of my soul," Johnny Rodrigues, chairman of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force, told AOL News today on the telephone from Harare. "But I have read what Parsons said, and he is totally ...
NEW DELHI -- India's latest tiger census shows an increase in the numbers of the endangered big cat. The census counted at least 1,706 tigers in forests across the country, about 300 more than four years ago, a government official said today. Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh called the increase good news but cautioned against any complacency in efforts to save the iconic animal from extinction. WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama says a new administration effort to protect public lands will put people back to work in tourism and recreation and help Americans stay healthier by encouraging outdoor activities. The initiative largely incorporates existing programs under a new name, "America's Great Outdoors." Still, it aims to double federal spending on land and water conservation to $900 million. The money would be used to buy private land for public use and provide grants to states. Obama said it is important to conserve public lands, even in tough economic times, and that the new ...
JAKARTA, Indonesia -- Conservationists say they got a rare glimpse of a 6-foot-long leatherback -- the world's most endangered sea turtle -- together with dozens of eggs in western Indonesia. Khairul Amra, a member of a local conservation group, said today that the giant turtle was spotted on a beach on Sumatra island over the weekend just before it plunged into the water. Soon after 65 eggs thought to belong to the leatherback were found in a nest -- the third such discovery on the same beach this year. Leatherbacks, which can grow up to 9 feet long, have roamed the oceans for 100 million ...
MEXICO CITY -- The number of monarch butterflies migrating from Canada and the U.S. to Mexico has increased this year, a hopeful sign following a worrying 75 percent drop in their numbers last year, experts reported Monday. The total amount of forest covered by the colonies -- millions of orange-and-black butterflies that hang in clumps from the boughs of fir trees -- more than doubled from last year's historic low. But concerns persist about the monarchs' long-term survival, because their numbers remain well below average. Miguel Tovar, AP A new report says there is a partial ...
UNITED NATIONS -- Some 380 million years after the first trees grew on Earth, the United Nations today declared 2011 to be the "International Year of Forests," saying that forests and the 1.6 billion people who depend on them for their livelihood need to be protected. "Each minute that we spend on this planet breathing in and breathing out, about 25 hectares [62 acres] of forests are lost," Joseph Deiss, president of the U.N. General Assembly, said at the global launch of the event. "Ultimately, as history reminds us, in the past, entire civilizations collapse due to deforestation." There ...
LONDON -- Call it panda politics. China is sending a pair of giant pandas to the Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland as the Asian nation's deputy leader visits the U.K. to boost relations. Vice Premier Li Keqiang, in London for trade talks with senior British officials, led the signing of the agreement Monday to send the animals to Edinburgh. A zoo spokeswoman says the male and female pandas are about seven years old. They will be on a 10-year loan to the zoo and are expected to arrive in the next year from China's Wulong Panda Research Institute. Li, who is widely expected to succeed Wen Jiabao as ...
(Oct. 27) -- A fifth of the world's mammals, birds, reptiles and fish are in imminent danger of being snuffed into extinction, according to a new study that also notes that conservation efforts are slowing many species' demise. The research, prepared by 174 scientists from around the world, was published in the journal Science and announced today at the U.N. Biodiversity Summit in Japan. Government delegates are discussing the study in hopes of mapping out a plan to slow or halt a decrease in the world's biodiversity. Related Stories New Species of Sneezing Monkey Found in ...
(Oct. 26) -- Fixing the hole in the ozone layer above Antarctica was supposed to be environmentalists' finest hour. In the late 1970s, an insidious, commonplace group of chemicals (chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs) was discovered to be causing horrible damage to the ozone layer. Governments were informed, CFCs were banned in 1989, and the day was saved. Unfortunately, it's taking a little while. Lt. Nick Morgan, of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Officer Corps, spends his time in the South Pole, launching into the air balloons containing instruments that can ...
