Students Clash With Police in London Tuition Protest

LONDON (Nov. 24) -- British students have once again taken to the streets to protest government plans to triple university fees and slash state funding for further education. Police have surrounded thousands of demonstrators near London's Houses of Parliament. A police van abandoned by officers in the middle of the crowd was attacked by a small mob, who rocked the vehicle back and forth, smashed its windshield with wooden poles and spray-painted an anarchist sign on the roof. However, soon after the attack began, other students formed a human chain around the vehicle to prevent further van...

British Students Protest Tuition Fee Hikes

LONDON (Nov. 24) -- Several thousand British students protested Wednesday against government plans to triple tuition fees, two weeks after a similar demonstration sparked a small riot. College and university students across the country held marches and sit-ins to oppose the decision to increase university fees to 9,000 pounds ($14,000) a year, a key plank in the government's deficit-cutting austerity measures. In London, the university students and younger pupils in school uniforms marched from Trafalgar Square toward the Houses of Parliament, chanting "no ifs, no buts, no education cuts." ...

Students Riot in London Over Tuition Fee Rises

LONDON (Nov. 10) -- A huge protest against the British government's plan to triple university tuition fees descended into violence today after hundreds of angry demonstrators smashed their way into the London headquarters of Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservative Party. An estimated 50,000 students, lecturers and supporters took in part in the demonstration against the ruling coalition's policy of charging students up to $14,500 a year for their education from 2012. That might seem like a relatively small bill when compared with the cost of an American college degree, but it's a mas...

Thousands of UK Students Protest Tuition Hikes

LONDON (Nov. 10) -- Tens of thousands of students marched noisily through London on Wednesday against plans to triple university tuition fees, and some tried to occupy the headquarters of the governing Conservative Party, in the largest street protest yet against the government's sweeping austerity measures. Organizers said 50,000 students, lecturers and supporters were demonstrating against plans to raise the cost of studying at a university to 9,000 pounds ($14,000) a year - three times the current rate. Violence flared as a handful of people smashed windows in a high-rise building that ho...

Rick Lazio Quits New York Governor's Race, Helping GOP

NEW YORK (Sept. 27) - Conservative Party candidate Rick Lazio on Monday withdrew from the race for governor, a decision that helps the tea party candidate who beat Lazio in the Republican primary. Lazio told The Associated Press that he wants to continue to influence the race and bring a workable job-creation program into a contest he says has devolved into name-calling between Republican Carl Paladino and Democrat Andrew Cuomo. Polls show Paladino rising against the once seemingly unassailable Cuomo, but the latest survey showed Lazio taking 8 percent of voters, most of whom would likely vo...

David Cameron Promises End to Big Government in U.K.

British Prime Minister David Cameron was the talk of the town Wednesday as he held his first face to face meeting with President Obama at the White House. But while foreign policy and the oil spill dominated the discussion between the two leaders in Washington, back in the U.K., Cameron was in the news for his domestic policy agenda. Shortly before leaving for Washington, the new prime minister unveiled a plan to dramatically redistribute power in Britain from the central government to local community organizations. In what is being billed as his most meaty policy speech since taking office i...

British Elections: Why Labour and Tories Are Declining, and 9 Other Trends

If you followed the press coverage of this month's general elections in the United Kingdom, you're likely to come away with the sense that we just witnessed a watershed moment in this country's political history. But were these elections really historic? And if so, why? There's no question that there was a lot of drama packed into the brief, four-week election period that ended on May 6. It saw the first-ever televised political debates between the three main party leaders. Nick Clegg became a household name. New Prime Minister David Cameron Ends Labour Party Era in Britain

Two years after the Conservatives surged to a 20 percentage point lead over Gordon Brown's sputtering Labour government in the British polls, 43-year-old Tory leader David Cameron finally became prime minister. But instead of an easy glide path to power, Cameron had to wait an agonizing five days after the inconclusive May 6 election before he could make the symbolic pilgrimage to Buckingham Palace on Tuesday night to formally accept Queen Elizabeth's invitation to form a new coalition government. Nearly 30 million British voters went to the polls in an election that left the Conservatives ju...
