Conservative Strategist and Publisher Rusher Dies at 87

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- William A. Rusher, a conservative strategist for more than 50 years who helped engineer Barry Goldwater's nomination as the Republican candidate for president in 1964, has died, officials confirmed Monday. Rusher died Saturday in a nursing facility in San Francisco at the age of 87 after a long illness. His death was confirmed by Richard Vetterli, a spokesman for the San Francisco Medical Examiner's Office. His influence was felt on decades of U.S. politics, from the 1961 stirrings of the "draft Goldwater" effort to opposing Richard Nixon's overtures to China in the ...

NPR Caught in James O'Keefe Sting; So What's the Fallout? [VIDEO]

NPR Caught in James O'Keefe Sting; So What's the Fallout? [VIDEO]

Smile for the camera. Soon-to-be-departing NPR executive Ron Schiller is the latest victim of hidden-camera wielding conservative activist James O'Keefe. Schiller, who thought he was sitting down with two Muslim philanthropists and potential donors, was caught on film making choice statements, including "tea party people" are "seriously racist, racist people," and NPR "would be better off in the long run without federal funding," a statement directly opposing the organization's official position. You can watch the video, here: Schiller was actually planning his departure from NPR ...

Murkowski: Alaskans Rejected Politics of Anger

Murkowski: Alaskans Rejected Politics of Anger

(Nov.18) -- Sen. Lisa Murkowksi, claiming an improbable write-in victory in Alaska's Senate race, signaled her independence Thursday and said voters in the state rejected the politics of anger in choosing her over a tea party candidate endorsed by Sarah Palin. "The numbers are what they are and they clearly indicate Alaskans have not only spoken, they have written it down," she said in an interview from Anchorage with NBC's "Today" show. Murkowski's ultra-conservative Republican opponent, Joe Miller, has yet to concede, but the Associated Press called the race for the incumbent on Wednesday ...

GOP's Rural White Guys: The Night They Drove New Dixie Down

GOP's Rural White Guys: The Night They Drove New Dixie Down

Republicans are busting with pride about the parade of rural white men who voted overwhelmingly for their candidates in last week's midterm elections. And not just on the national level. You have to go back to 1966 to find the same number of state legislature switches. You have to go back to 1928 to find this many state legislature seats filled with Republicans. That fact alone could ripple for years to come, due to the potential for partisan gerrymandering (fun fact: so named for the salamander-shaped district designed by a Gov. Gerry in 1812 Massachusetts). Representative districts are ...

Andrew Breitbart Slams ABC for Dropping Him From Election Coverage

Andrew Breitbart Slams ABC for Dropping Him From Election Coverage

(Nov. 2) -- Maybe Fox News will hire him. On the day that he was supposed to provide commentary about the outcome of the midterm elections, conservative media personality Andrew Breitbart learned from ABC News that his services would no longer be required. Breitbart runs Big Government, the right-leaning website that was responsible for airing an edited clip of USDA official Shirley Sherrod that resulted in her firing. On Tuesday, Andrew Morse, the chief of ABC's political division, sent Breitbart the following letter: Dear Mr. Breitbart, We have spent the past several days trying to make ...

Why Are Elders Stirring the Tea Party Movement?

Why Are Elders Stirring the Tea Party Movement?

(Oct. 30) -- The tea party skews old. Media descriptions of the conservative movement's protests are incomplete without references to a Walmart's worth of wheelchairs and walkers amid a sea of gray heads. Surveys of tea party supporters have found that half are over age 55 and something like a third are 65 or older. Why? Many experts have suggested that the elders were motivated by fear that the Obama administration will cut their Social Security or Medicare payments. But new research into the roots of elders' political and cultural attitudes suggests there may be other factors at work as ...

After Juan Williams: Does NPR Still Matter?

After Juan Williams: Does NPR Still Matter?

(Oct. 25) -- The Juan Williams firing has turned much attention toward NPR, much of it negative. Fox News, which rewarded Williams with a handsome contract, and other conservative outlets have called for a pulling of public funding from the radio organization, a sort of punishment also favored by Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., and Williams himself. (NPR only gets about 2 percent of its budget from the government, however.) Also, there are calls for NPR's increasingly apologetic CEO Vivian Schiller to resign, which, at least to my ears, sounds reasonable since she obviously bungled the entire ...
