STERLING, Va. – Politics is often a sleight-of-hand act designed to distract voters from their immediate concerns with the artful use of bright, shiny objects. These days, for example, beleaguered Democrats are trying every form of legerdemain ("Look at the crazy things my opponent has said") to divert attention from the flailing economy. But it seems baffling why congressional Republicans -- with most trends flowing in their direction -- so badly want to complicate the 2010 campaign season. Watching 13 House Republicans all dressed for Casual Thursday unveil their "Pledge to America" ...
(Sept. 23) -- The GOP unveiled a new "Contract with America," sorry, scratch that, "Pledge to America," today, attempting to articulate to voters what Republicans would do differently, specifically, if they were in charge of Congress. Of course, the new document was designed to echo Newt Gingrich's seminal 1994 document, "The Contract with America," which is widely credited with helping usher in a 12-year Republican Congressional majority. Although Republicans were already favored to make big gains when voters go to the polls for the midterm elections on November 2, it is unclear how much ...
(Sept. 23) -- Congressional Republicans have maintained that their "Pledge to America" would not be another "Contract with America." That's for sure. In the same sense that Dan Quayle was "no Jack Kennedy." The 1994 Contract was a masterpiece of political communication that rocked the nation by laying out in clear, simple language eight straightforward action steps and 10 specific pieces of legislation Republicans in Congress would enact if handed control after four decades out of power. It was a timely, smart and taut political manifesto -- just two pages long and easily digestible. The ...
(Sept. 22) -- The Republican Party, hoping to relive 1994, is about to introduce its "Pledge to America," the 2010 version of the "Contract on with America." The introduction says it's time to "reclaim the government for the people." I believe it was actual "people" who elected Barack Obama in 2008 and put Democrats in control of both houses of Congress. These "people" controlled their own limbs when they went into voting booths and pressed levers. And the people elected by the people did what they told the people they would do: provide health care, reform Wall Street and stimulate the ...
Republicans are going back to their '90s playbook as Election Day approaches, planning to unveil a new "Contract With America." A GOP spokesman told The Hill that House and Senate Republicans will introduce the new compact on Thursday in Virginia. The document will showcase the GOP's agenda should the party be restored to power on Capitol Hill. GOP leaders have already hinted at some of the ideas that could be included. According to The Hill: House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio), for instance, has called for a two-year freeze in tax rates and a reduction in spending to 2008 levels. ...
Today's Washington Post includes a somewhat controversial quote from former Speaker Newt Gingrich on the subject of political consultants: "Consultants, in my opinion, are stupid," he tells them. ... It turns out, this is not a new revelation. In fact, three years ago, I reported on Gingrich's disdain for political consultants when I interviewed him in in Atlanta, Georgia. Here's what he had to say back in 2007: I think Republican consultants are mostly very stupid. I think they have no education. I think they have no sense of history. ... If I throw away African Americans, and then I ...
House Republican John Boehner is bringing back Barry Jackson, the top Republican staff member responsible for House Republicans' "Contract with America," to work for him as his chief of staff. In addition to his role helping the Republicans win the House majority in 1994, Jackson later served in the White House an assistant to President George W. Bush for Strategic Initiatives and External Affairs, the office created by Karl Rove. ...
