The 200 farmers, mostly from northeastern Japan, wore green bandanas, held aloft cabbages they said they couldn't sell and carried signs saying "Stop nuclear energy" outside the headquarters of Tokyo Electric Power Co., the operator of the plant damaged in the March 11 tsunami. "My patience has run out. The nuclear crisis is totally destroying our farming business," said ...
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - An Alabama-based law firm said Monday it has withdrawn its class-action lawsuit that sought to force Taco Bell to stop calling the meat it serves "beef." The lawsuit, filed in January in federal court in California, alleged that what Taco Bell calls "seasoned beef" is a meat mixture that has binders and extenders and does not meet federal requirements to be labeled beef. The fast-food chain said Monday the lawsuit was voluntarily withdrawn by the firm. It said no money was exchanged and it is not changing any of its products or advertising. "This sets the record straight ...
Standing before a table laid with gleaming pink slabs of raw fish, mounds of white rice and green seaweed, Nikki Rhum, 15, layers thin strips of lobster, fresh avocado, fried shrimp and bacon bits onto rice. "I love sushi," the freshman from Buffalo Grove, Ill., said, flashing a giant grin. Along with a half-dozen other foodies, she spent Saturday afternoon at downtown Chicago hot spot Sunda, learning from founding chef Rodelio Aglibot. It's one of two cooking sessions scheduled as part of the launch of In Chef's Hands, a nonprofit that pairs chefs with food lovers with special needs for ...
Hard-fought-for laws and regulations to save lives and the environment will be gutted or eliminated in budget cuts passed by the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives or ordered by President Barack Obama's team, experts say. Public health and environmental experts say it's indisputable that lives will be lost if these cuts are made: 1) The Consumer Product Safety Commission. The commission is scheduled next week to roll out its long-awaited public database on the safety of consumer products. For the first time, it will allow shoppers to quickly determine whether products they ...
NEW YORK -- A new exhibition from Italy that opens today in New York's Discovery Times Square captures the last gasp of the ancient city of Pompeii before it was buried under volcanic ash, mud and rock when Mount Vesuvius erupted 2,000 years ago. Copies of body casts that researchers made from the skeletal remains of residents buried alive are an eerie part of the exhibit -- a crouching man covers his mouth, a chained dog appears contorted, a family of four huddle together. A short film recreates what Pompeians might have felt as they tried to escape. The museum's floor vibrates as the ...
British officials have stopped a London ice cream parlor from selling a frozen dairy treat made from human breast milk amid concerns that the unusual dessert may not be safe. The Icecreamists parlor introduced the "Baby Gaga" flavor Feb. 25. The flavor's creator told told AOL Weird News that the ice cream was as much food for thought as actual food. "Some people are turned off by the idea, but, really, it raises the philosophical question: Is it better if we use milk from cows injected with hormones who are artificially induced with pregnancy every few months, or human milk?" Matt O'Connor ...
A London ice cream parlor is titillating its customers with a new flavor made from human breast milk. The restaurant is called the Icecreamists and the new flavor, which is named "Baby Gaga," goes on sale Friday and is made from a mix of cream made from 75 percent human breast milk and 25 percent cream from old Bossy herself. Oh, and some Madagascan vanilla pods and lemon zest to make it fancy. Cheesy as the concept sounds, Icecreamists founder Matt O'Connor sees Baby Gaga as food for thought as much as consumption. Shortly after the news about the Taco Bell lawsuit came out, I and my students started to monitor the media coverage about the "beef over beef." What we found was that, while the lawsuit offers American consumers a valuable lesson about what we eat, when it comes to reporting about what the meat really is made of, most journalists aren't exactly being accurate. The lawsuit, for those who haven't been following the case, alleges that Taco Bell was falsely claiming the meat filling used in its tacos and burritos to be beef, since only a small percentage was actually meat. First, it's worth ...
