US Expects Bigger Corn Crop to Ease Food Inflation

ST. LOUIS -- U.S. farmers are expected to boost the size of this year's corn crop, potentially easing global food inflation. The Agriculture Department reports that farmers intend to plant 92.2 million acres of corn this spring, a 5 percent increase over last year. That would make it the second-biggest corn crop since 1944, after a record-setting planting in 2007. Grain prices are at their highest levels since the food crisis of 2008. New production will help ease concerns over a supply pinch. Worries over a shortage have doubled the price of corn since last summer, from $3.50 to more than ...

Corn Syrup -- More High Fructose Than We Thought?

Corn Syrup -- More High Fructose Than We Thought?

(Oct. 27) -- For years, nutritionists and industry officials alike have considered the merits of high-fructose corn syrup with one key fact in mind: At a chemical level, it has nearly equal levels of fructose and glucose. As it turns out, that may not be true after all. A new study published in the journal Obesity measured the amounts of different types of sugars in 23 kinds of drinks sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup. And they found that several brands contained corn syrup made up of 65 percent fructose, not 55 percent, which has been the commonly cited statistic until now. The ...

'Fructose-Slurping' Cancer Could Sour Soda Business

'Fructose-Slurping' Cancer Could Sour Soda Business

Soda and processed-food manufacturers have long insisted that all sugars are essentially the same. Yet, simultaneously they're delicately backing away from high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) as one study after another links the corn-based sweetener to obesity and diabetes. While the market for HFCS declined by 9% in 2008, says Ken Roseboro of the Organic and Non-GMO Report, it was still used in 55% of all sweetened edibles in 2009. ...

Children of the Corn: Subsidies, Incentives and Health Reform

In 1959, as the tensions of the Cold War seethed into their second decade, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev paid a visit to the United States. His stops included New York, Washington, Los Angeles, and, much to the head-scratching of the CIA, a little stop in between: Iowa (and yes, a 50th anniversary commemoration exists). Russia had stolen the formula for the atomic bomb. She could send satellites into space. But the one area where we the capitalists had her beat wasn't in a secret smuggled around in briefcases handcuffed to wrists but in a practice as old as civilization itself: agriculture. ...

Corn: A Story With More Than One Kernel of Truth

Corn: A Story With More Than One Kernel of Truth

After my most recent rant -- I mean post -- on cheap food, I received a very nice response from Audrae Erickson, the president of the Corn Refiners Association, seeking to clear up any confusion about government subsidies and corn, and to allay any concerns about the sweet nature of corn sweetener. Ms. Erickson posted a short reply in the comments section of my original post, and then followed up with a more detailed reply in an e-mail. Her message reminded me that there are always (at least) two sides to a story. For instance, among the points she made is this one: "Manufacturers of corn ...

Fast-Food Enabler: Subsidized Corn

Woman Up is waging a fast-food fight (Delia, Jan, Domenica), and I'm all for it, especially after my husband and I stumbled across the documentary, "Food, Inc.," about the hidden dangers found on our collective dinner plate. Let's just say that no Quentin Tarantino film has ever made me cover my eyes so often. ...
