Charlie Louvin Dead From Cancer: Video Tribute for the Country Music Star

Charlie Louvin, one half of the Louvin Brothers country music duo, passed away early this morning after suffering complications from pancreatic cancer. He was 83. Charlie and his brother Ira toured together until the early 1960s, reviving "country music's emotional, full-throated harmony tradition" with 10 top-20 Billboard country selections before Ira's untimely death in 1965. Their hits included "My Baby's Gone," "When I Stop Dreaming" and "I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby." Charlie Louvin spent many years as a star of the Grand Ole Opry, and the Louvin Brothers were inducted into the ...

Steve Martin Writes, Plays on Second Bluegrass Album

LOS ANGELES -- Steve Martin is back behind the banjo. The 65-year-old actor, author and recent Oscar host will release his second bluegrass album in March. Martin spent months on the road performing with the Steep Canyon Rangers, and the bluegrass quintet backs him on "Rare Bird Alert," which includes 13 new songs he wrote. The album also features some impressive guest stars: The Dixie Chicks and Sir Paul McCartney. Skip Bolen, WireImage Steve Martin performs with the Steep Canyon Rangers at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival last April. "It's very hard to believe," ...

Elizabeth Cook on 'Welder'

Elizabeth Cook on 'Welder'

Country singer Elizabeth Cook joins us on the podcast today to discuss her terrific album "Welder" -- which I think is one of the best releases of the year (it's on Rolling Stone's list of the "Best Albums of 2010"). The album's name comes from her father, who "learned to weld when he was in jail, running moonshine for the mafia," she tells me. Many of the songs on the album -- such as "El Camino" and "Heroine Addict Sister" -- include a raw sound and lyrics that are probably more alternative than what you will find on typical radio-friendly country songs. "I'm very lucky to have any format ...

Biden Tours Flood-Damaged Opry House in Nashville

The pickers and singers have fallen silent at the Grand Ole Opry and Vice President Joe Biden saw why, as he toured the historic music shrine that took on 46 inches of water during the spring flooding in Nashville. "I'm not gonna sing," the vice president told reporters as he walked across the stage of the 36-year-old building. Biden was in Nashville Friday to speak at a fund-raising even for the Tennessee Democratic Party. Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, Rep. Jim Cooper, (D-Tenn.), and Nashville Mayor Karl Dean showed Biden around the Opry House, the epicenter of American country music from ...

The POTUS in Tight Jeans? 'I'm Sorry, I'm Not the Guy.'

Six months to the day after taking office, President Obama and First Lady Michelle marked Tuesday evening with country music at the White House. In the morning, the president had defended the cut of his jeans. In between, he was pushing Congress -- particularly reluctant Democrats -- to pass a health care package before lawmakers took off for the summer. ...

Adam Ballard Goes Hank Williams Jr. Style

Adam Ballard Goes Hank Williams Jr. Style

Is Adam Ballard not the coolest fullback ever? After telling you about the Navy fullback's love for country music last month, I stumbled across an actual performance of his (cowboy hat and all) while browsing around the NBC website. To watch Adam give his rendition of the Hank Williams Jr. classic "Family Tradition" with a college football spin, check out NBC Sports.com and click the link on the left sidebar which says "Love of Country". As a fine connoisseur of country music, I can say that this wasn't exactly the pinnacle of the Nashville influence, but who's going to argue with a ...

Adam Ballard Likes Country Music (and Football)

Adam Ballard Likes Country Music (and Football)

Adam Ballard is so much more then just a big, bruising fullback who routinely knocks defenders on their backs. In fact, according to the Baltimore Sun, Adam Ballard is a big, bruising fullback who wants to grow up to be a country music singer. Gee, I thought I was the only one. In all seriousness, this is pretty much the coolest thing I've seen all day. In a world where we as fans routinely see football players bobbing their heads and spewing out profanity laced rap lyrics, it's great to see someone like Ballard take it old school, ala Hank Jr. The fact that this is actually a viable ...
