Al Qaeda Launches English Language Magazine

Al Qaeda says it is launching an English-language magazine, fueling speculation that the group might be trying to recruit more home-grown terrorists in the West. The first issue of the magazine, called "Inspire," was posted on radical Islamic websites Tuesday. "[It] is clearly intended for the aspiring jihadist in the U.S. or U.K. who may be the next Fort Hood murderer or Times Square bomber," Bruce Riedel, a Brookings Institution scholar, told Fox News. "The trend we've seen in the last year and a half is less global terrorism and much more homegrown domestic terrorism within Muslim ...

Christopher Hitchens Diagnosed with Cancer, Cancels Book Tour

Author and journalist Christopher Hitchens said Wednesday that he is undergoing chemotherapy for cancer of the esophagus and has canceled the remainder of his tour in support of his new memoir, Hitch-22. Hitchens broke the news in a brief statement on the website of Vanity Fair, where he is a columnist. "I have been advised by my physician that I must undergo a course of chemotherapy on my esophagus," Hitchens wrote. "This advice seems persuasive to me. I regret having had to cancel so many engagements at such short notice." Esophageal cancer is often caused by alcohol and tobacco ...

Protesters Dressed as Founding Fathers Crash D.C. Fundraisers

Rolling around the capital in a dark-green trolley Wednesday morning, a troupe of actors dressed as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and Betsy Ross visited three D.C. fund-raising hotspots to protest special interests and crusade for the Fair Elections Now Act, a bill that would establish a public funding system for House and Senate elections and limit outside sources of cash for congressional campaigns. "We cast off the yoke of British tyranny, and today we are called on again to cast off the yoke of British Petroleum," an actor playing Thomas Jefferson said outside the ...

Pamela Gorman, Arizona GOP Candidate, Fires Machine Gun in Video

In a video created by her volunteers, Arizona state lawmaker Pamela Gorman, a Republican candidate for congress, shows off her mastery of firearms by emptying a round from a machine gun and firing a pistol. As a narrator describes her as a "conservative Christian and a pretty fair shot," Gorman fires one gun after another. In a postscript to the video posted on YouTube, Gorman described the spot as a "fun video put together by some volunteers. As much fun as this video is, you should know that I am very serious about the future of America. I do hope you will take a closer look at my work ...

Hamid Karzai Aides Obstructing Corruption Investigations in Afghanistan

Top aides in President Hamid Karzai's government have repeatedly derailed investigations of politically connected Afghans, The Washington Post reports. U.S. officials said Afghan investigators have been instructed to cross names off case files, keep senior officials from being arrested, and ignore evidence against executives of a major financial firm suspected of helping the country's powerful elite move millions of dollars overseas. U.S. officials have provided Afghanistan with wiretapping technology and other resources to crack down on the fraud and corruption that continues to delegitimize ...

Sen. Robert Byrd's Seniority Passes Into Legend

Sen. Robert Byrd the most senior member of the Democratic Congressional Caucus, in both age and number of terms in office, has answered his last roll call. In point of fact, for the last several years the 92-year-old statesman, who died early Monday, failed to answer far more U.S. Senate vote counts than most citizens of any state would normally tolerate. But the voters of West Virginia returned Byrd to office nine times, and if it were possible to serve from the crypt, the voters of West Virginia would re-elect him for a 10th six-year term. President Barack Obama today stated that with the ...

Vatican Rebukes Cardinal for Criticizing Colleague on Sex Abuse Comments

The Vatican issued on Monday an extraordinary public rebuke of an Austrian cardinal and former student of Pope Benedict XVI for comments last April in which he criticized a fellow cardinal who seemed to dismiss sex abuse revelations as "petty gossip" aimed at hurting the pope. The Austrian cardinal, Christoph Schönborn of Vienna, who helped elect Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger as Pope Benedict in the conclave of 2005, had also made subsequent comments in the press raising questions about mandatory celibacy for priests, and Schönborn was also forced to explain those remarks in his meeting with the ...

Never Mind That Sex Allegation: Al Gore Writes Op-Ed, Raises Money for Dems

A massage therapist's recent claim that Al Gore demanded sexual contact from her in 2006 may have put Gore back in the hot seat on late night talk shows, but so far it doesn't seem to be hurting his standing in political and media circles. Late last week Gore published a Wall Street Journal piece on how to create "a more long-term and responsible form of capitalism." And on Monday he sent out a fundraising pitch for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. In the pitch, timed for urgency as a June 30 fundraising deadline looms, Gore says "we must keep pace" with House Minority Leader ...

California Discovers 3,500 Nurses Have Bad Records in Other States

California's registered nursing board has discovered that 3,500 nurses working in the state had been punished by other states, and even had their licenses revoked, while maintaining clean records in California, ProPublica reports. After a joint investigation by the non-profit ProPublica and The Los Angeles Times last year, California examined its registry of 376,000 nurses in the state, and is now preparing to take disciplinary action against 2,000 nurses. Nurses currently working in California have been sanctioned in other states for sexual abuse, neglect, rampant drug use and other criminal ...

Supreme Court Ruling Backs Individual Gun Rights

Supreme Court Ruling Backs Individual Gun Rights

The U.S. Supreme Court declared Monday that individual gun rights under the Second Amendment apply and may be used to block enforcement of certain restrictive state and local gun control ordinances. By a 5-4 vote along the court's familiar ideological lines, the justices jeopardized two Illinois ordinances and threw hundreds more around the nation into doubt. At the same time, however, the court reiterated its view that lawmakers could continue to impose certain reasonable restrictions on gun ownership and possession. Justice Samuel Alito wrote the majority opinion in McDonald v. Chicago ...
