The president has signed the repeal of "Don't ask, Don't tell," but Defense Secretary Robert Gates is warning troops that the policy banning gays from serving openly in the military is still in effect. Gates sent a memo this week to military officials reminding them that the 17-year-old law won't be voided until at least 60 days after the government certifies that the armed forces are prepared to implement it. The National Journal reported Thursday that the memo warns that service members who violate the law could still face "adverse consequences." Pentagon officials have said it's still ...
Elizabeth Edwards died Tuesday after a six-year battle with breast cancer, The Associated Press and ABC News reported. She was 61. On Monday her family announced that Edwards, who was briefly hospitalized over the Thanksgiving holiday, had stopped all cancer treatment. She had been resting at home surrounded by family and friends. Edwards, the estranged wife of John Edwards, the former North Carolina senator and one-time presidential candidate, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004. She recently wrote a message on her Facebook page that would end up being a farewell. "You all know ...
It's being called the "Worst disaster in Israeli history." It's not terror. It's got nothing to do with the peace process. It's a wildfire, raging out of control from Haifa through the lush and beautiful Carmel Mountains. Forty are already dead. Mass evacuations have begun from northern towns and villages, as well as from dorms at Haifa University, displacing an estimated 10,000. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has left his home in Jerusalem to travel to the scene. He has issued a call for help internationally, appealing to the United States, Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Russia. But so far ...
Another big break for Sen. John Ensign, after federal prosecutors announced Wednesday the Nevada Republican would not face charges related to payments he made following his extramarital affair with a former campaign staffer. "The Department of Justice has informed us that Senator Ensign is no longer a target of its investigation and that it has no plans to bring any charges against him on this matter," Ensign's lawyers said in statement first obtained by The Las Vegas Sun. Ensign is still the subject of a probe by the Senate ethics committee over his affair with Cynthia Hampton, his former ...
American's for Tax Reform, the conservative group run by Grover Norquist, will host a debate for candidates seeking to head the Republican National Committee on Jan. 3, 2010 at the National Press Club. "The actual vote for RNC chairman will be made by the 168 members of the committee, but the impact will be felt by all. Therefore, every activist should play a role in questioning the candidates and communicating with RNC members who cast votes . . . just like lobbying your Congressman and Senators. We are working with bloggers and other activists to develop the questions to be asked during ...
A year ago, the Nobel Committee shocked the world by bestowing the Peace Prize on a surprised President Obama. This time, it's Chinese officials who are probably reeling, as the committee gave the award to Liu Xiaobo, a dissident serving an 11-year prison term in China. Liu was sentenced in 2009 for inciting subversion of state power. He is the co-author of "Charter 08," a call for political reform and human rights, and was an adviser to the student protesters at Tiananmen Square in 1989. Obama praised the selection of Liu, and called upon China to release him from prison. In a statement ...
It's no surprise that a new Gallup poll shows that the economy and jobs are cited as the top issues facing the country as Election Day approaches. But the survey renders a split decision on which political party would handle those issues best, with Republicans favored on the economy in general and the Democrats by those who most often mentioned jobs and unemployment. The economy and jobs also top the most-important lists in the other major national polls that have come out during September. Health care reform is far behind despite the political heat it generated throughout the spring, when ...
The former treasurer of the National Republican Congressional Committee has pleaded guilty to embezzling $845,000 in GOP campaign funds over a six-year period. Christopher J. Ward acknowledged in court papers that between 2001 and 2007 he transferred money from campaign accounts he controlled to his own bank account, Congressional Quarterly reported. Most of the 18 committee accounts he stole from were set up to fund the President's Dinner, an annual GOP fundraiser. Prosecutors said Ward also falsified NRCC paperwork filed to the Federal Election Commission, CQ said. The NRCC has agreed to ...
When the Dove World Outreach Center announced last month that it would commemorate the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks by staging a burning of the Koran, Islam's holy book, it seemed to confirm the Gainesville, Fla.-based church as a fringe element even among Christian fundamentalists. That reputation was solidified Tuesday night when CNN reported that Dove's pastor, Terry Jones, had accepted an offer from a militia group called Right Wing Extreme to send between 500 and 2,000 men on September 11 to protect the congregation "in light of the death and terror threats we have ...
