Political Figures Who Made Their Last Farewells in 2010

David Broder Is Not the Dean of Me (And I Do Not Cry for Charlie Rangel)

David Broder Is Not the Dean of Me (And I Do Not Cry for Charlie Rangel)

If David Broder wants to weep for Charlie Rangel, that is his business. What bothers me, though, about Broder's Washington Post column justifying and praising the censured congressman, is the mortifying suggestion that the long-serving "dean of the Washington press corps" is speaking for, as he says outright at one point, "many of us in the press gallery.'' I hope that's not the case, as I not only disagree with nearly every word of "Happy Warriors Brought Low," but see in it much of what America minds about our poor, ailing industry. "This was a sad time for many of us watching Charlie ...

Rosty's 'Catastrophic' Moment Over Health Care Was a First

WASHINGTON (Aug. 11) -- Long before raucous town hall meetings and tea party protests over government-run health care, there was the "catastrophic" chaos surrounding Dan Rostenkowski's car. As Washington remembered the former Chicago congressman, who died today, a former aide spoke with AOL News about a remarkable chapter in health care policy-making, or in that case, unmaking. "I was out there on the street with him that day," recalled Jim Jaffe, Rostenkowski's longtime press secretary. "When you see the video with the old lady chasing him down the hill, I was there. It was a wonderful ...

Former Illinois Rep. Dan Rostenkowski Dies at 82

(Aug. 11) -- Former House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dan Rostenkowski died Wednesday at the age of 82 at his summer home in Wisconsin. Rostenkowski was one of the most powerful lawmakers in the House, courted by presidents from both parties while living in a blue-collar Chicago neighborhood. His career came to an end because of a scandal that earned him a 17 month sentence. At the peak of his power, Rostenkowski -- many called him Danny -- delivered billions of dollars in federal money to Chicago, influenced tax policy for decades, and mastered the art of making a deal. ...

Emily's Post: From Gossip Fodder to Gossip Columnist

Emily's Post: From Gossip Fodder to Gossip Columnist

Having been fodder for every gossip column in town, starting today I'm turning the tables -- and becoming one D.C. gossip columnist who fully gets what it's like to be on the receiving end. Everybody knows Washington politics is not for the meek or thin-skinned. And I've lived, worked and loved D.C. politics and media since I was 18 years old. In the years since, I've toiled on the Hill, at the State Department, in the Bush 43 administration, and for the Washington bureaus of two TV network news divisions. I've also counted chads in the Florida recount, run for my life from the Capitol on ...
