You'll recognize her immediately -- she's the blunt-talking, young Korean-American woman praised by governors, scolded by teachers unions and pursued by the press. Alex Wong, Getty Images Former Washington, D.C., public schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee is taking her successful reform ideas nationwide. As someone who spent the better part of a year researching a book about Rhee, allow me to set the scene for what made her famous in Washington, D.C.; why she's visiting your state; ...
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Dec. 14) -- Federal authorities say an Arlington man is accused of making a threat on Facebook to blow up the D.C. subway system. A judge ordered a mental evaluation for Awais Younis on Tuesday. He was arrested last week on charges of communicating threats across state lines. A sworn statement from an FBI agent says Younis told a friend on the social networking site that he could use pipe bombs to kill people on the Metro system and in D.C.'s Georgetown neighborhood. The friend alerted the FBI. Younis also made threats online against the friend. ...

FBI agents arrested Farooque Ahmed, 34, of Ashburn, Va., on Wednesday on charges that he conspired with people he thought were al-Qaida operatives to blow up the Arlington National Cemetery, Pentagon City, Crystal City and Court House subway stations in Northern Virginia. (July 21) -- The Sunlight Foundation is a nonpartisan nonprofit that uses technology to try to make government more transparent. One way it does that is to release (in cooperation with the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call) massive, searchable databases culled from the House of Representatives' expense reports. There's enough in the data dumps to keep oversight-obsessed numbers junkies busy for weeks. Being oversight-obsessed numbers junkies, that's just what we have done. (June 28) -- In a sharply divided 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court ruled Monday that state governments are not able to ban most Americans from owning most types of handguns. The majority decision, written by Justice Samuel Alito, stated that firearms are "essential for self-defense." Predictably, gun control advocates bemoaned the ruling. But the court's decision is not just correct on constitutional grounds. It will help make the country safer. Another View The gun pushers lobby must be disappointed, since the Supreme Court ruling continues to allow for a wide variety of reasonable gun ...
The crash of a vintage aircraft at Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. this morning, as harrowing as it may have been, appears to have had a relatively happy ending for both the pilot and the single passenger, who happened to be a reporter who filed one of the first stories on the incident. Yes, incredible as it may be, Washington Post transportation writer Ashley Halsey III was aboard one of the many vintage aircraft circling the D.C. skies Tuesday morning, specifically a World War II-era Boening Stearman Model 75 biplane. The aerial event was organized for the premiere of "Legends ...

White House Spokesman Tommy Vietor and Chief Speechwriter Jon Favreau may have been caught red cup-handed, with their shirts off, standing around a beer pong table at Washington, D.C. bar and restaurant Old Glory over the weekend, according to the celeb-spotter website FamousDC.com. The photo allegedly shows Vietor and Favreau, both age 29, surrounded by a group of other revelers, cast in celestial beams of light so bright they are apparently forcing the two muscular lads to don their shades. Hello Betty! It's so nice to have you back where you belong. In a world where women on television seem to get younger and thinner and more vapid by the moment (and the 99.9 percent of the rest disappear, fade back, or take on more serious roles), suddenly the sassiest, smartest, sexiest woman on air is . . . 88½-year-old Betty White, the Old School comedienne, born in 1922 and armed with tongue-in-cheek double entendres alongside nods to her once-and-future sexual prowess and her aging peer-group. All of which kicks anyone born in 1992 to the curb. Sorry kids. Maybe she never left us, ...
