I sat in the aisle next to the Michigan delegation, all of them in hockey jerseys. (They went berserk at the pit bull remark.) I can't imagine speaking to a crowd of 37 million after the week she's had (even if she's mostly responsible for the press pandemonium surrounding her personal life). And yet she seemed totally centered. To say she was "just" reading a speech is stupidity. (It took a superstar like Hillary Clinton 20 years to figure out how to deliver a speech.) What's more she said much of what Giuliani said right ...
Anti-war protesters tried to block the Connecticut delegation from entering the Xcel Center for the start of the Republican National Convention here in St. Paul. Heath Fahle, the Executive Director of the Connecticut Republican party, told the Political Machine that 80 to 100 protesters were pushing and shoving Connecticut delegates, many of them senior citizens, as they tried to enter the arena for yesterday's session. Mr. Fahle said that the protesters were chanting anti-war slogans and hurling insults and epithets at the delegates."The protesters sat down in the street and were physically ...
The Republican National Convention's abbreviated schedule opened here in St. Paul today with all eyes on the Louisiana coast, where Hurricane Gustav made landfall earlier today. None more than in the Louisiana delegation, which despite the storm remains here at the convention, doing its work on behalf of the people of their state.Delegate Lois Hoover, from Monroe, Louisiana, said that the delegation was very mindful of the goings on back home. "We've been very lucky so far," she said. "In my town in the Northeast part of the state, we have over 7,000 refuges in just our little town." Ms. ...
First Lady Laura Bush is in St. Paul for the Republican National Convention, although most of the day's events are canceled due to the landfall of Hurricane Gustav near New Orleans. About a dozen delegates from the state returned home yesterday on a plane chartered by the McCain campaign so that they could deal with hurricane preparations.Speaking from the Xcel Energy Center, site of the convention, Mrs. Bush said that the nation's eyes were rightly turned to the Gulf Coast region ...
The vast majority of Americans have never been to a political convention, and the perception that delegates are wined and dined by various special interests and corporations is common. While that may be true for party big wigs and elected officials, the gifts lavished on individual delegates are comparatively modest. Each delegate at the Republican Convention received a gift tote bag, sponsored by Coca-Cola and the Southern Company, containing an assortment of small promotional items from various companies. The bags are advertising vehicles meant to generate good will for the companies more ...
As the Democratic National Convention begins its presidential nominating process with the traditional roll call of the states this afternoon in Denver, some supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton remain unconvinced that she wants them to support Sen. Barack Obama as the party's nominee. Mrs. Clinton met with her delegates earlier today and officially released them from voting for her on the convention floor. But some say that they will cast their votes for Sen. Clinton anyhow. "I don't think she believed that her supporters are going to fall in line behind Obama," said Darragh Murphy, founder of ...
There's a Democratic National Convention delegate from Wisconsin who has her fellow Dems in a tizzy. Debra Bartoshevich, who pledged to back Hillary Rodham Clinton, is defending herself from an attempt by Wisconsin Democrats to take away her credentials because of her past statement that she would vote for John McCain if Clinton wasn't the nominee. She recently was quoted in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel as saying she would vote for the McCain in November if the Democratic Party nominated Barack Obama."Keeping national delegate status is very important to me," Bartoshevich told the AP. "I ...

The $11 million Clinton gave her campaign could buy everyone in New York City a lottery ticket. The total campaign cost could have bought everyone in the city a movie ticket. ABC News is reporting that Sen.
