Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!(Nov. 5) -- Like a bad segment on MSNBC's "Countdown," the Keith Olbermann suspension episode (which may rapidly transition into the Keith Olbermann firing episode) just keeps on getting more outlandish. Late this afternoon, the unapologetically left- (sorry, "forward") leaning cable news show host was unceremoniously suspended by his network without pay, indefinitely, following the revelation that he gave undisclosed campaign contributions to Democratic candidates running in the 2010 midterms. Hours later, his supposed interim replacement, Chris Hayes, was yanked from the show as well, but ...
(Sept. 2) -- While Democrats may complain about the tyranny of the filibuster and lack of majority rule in our congressional system, when it comes to preserving the Bush tax cuts for the rich, it's likely to be their own party members who are responsible. President Barack Obama has indicated that he'd like to see the cuts remain in place for Americans who earn less than $250,000 a year but see those who earn more taxed at the pre-2001 rates. "However, a small but growing number of moderate Democrats are balking at boosting taxes on the rich," reports McClatchy Newspapers. McClatchy ...
EAST HADDAM, Conn. (Jan. 6) - Christopher Dodd, saying he was in "the toughest political shape" of his career, announced Wednesday he will retire from the U.S. Senate, ending a four-decade career in Congress. Dodd said outside his home in East Haddam that he would not run for a sixth term. Dodd's political stock fell after a controversy involving low-rate mortgages he received under a VIP program, the financial meltdown and his failed 2008 presidential bid. The 65-year-old chairman of the Senate Banking Committee was trailing former Republican Congressman Rob Simmons in the polls. Dodd, who ...
WASHINGTON (Jan. 2) -- An already difficult situation for Democrats in Congress is worsening as the 2010 political season opens. To minimize expected losses in next fall's election, President Barack Obama's party is testing a line of attack that resurrects George W. Bush as a boogeyman and castigates Republicans as cozy with Wall Street. Four House Democrats from swing districts have recently chosen not to seek re-election, bringing to 11 the number of retirements that could leave Democratic-held seats vulnerable to Republicans. More Democratic retirements are expected. Over the holiday ...
Today the Washington Post endorsed the lesser-known Creigh Deeds over longtime Democratic fundraiser, alligator wrestler, and FOHB, (friend of Hillary and Bill Clinton) Terry McAuliffe in the David-and-Goliath Democratic primary for Virginia governor. The paper's nod is a prized endorsement for state-wide Democrats, who rely heavily on the population-rich Northern Virginia region that the Post covers. ...
Bipartisanship fail! Although this is a win for House Democrats, it has to be seen as a failure for Obama, as he went to the GOP how many times? In order to persuade them with some smooooth bipartisanship talk.Apparently the House GOP doesn't have quite the man crush on Obama that others do.MarketWatchThe U.S. House of Representatives Wednesday approved an $819 billion economic stimulus plan. The vote was 244-188. Eleven Democratic members voted against the legislation and no Republicans voted for it, NBC News said. Excellent. This is a Democratic bill through and through. And it's not beyond ...
This could be interesting. Democrats know they have a good thing going with the whole Obama cult of personality and figure the bigger venue the better, and why not open it up to the general public: Barack Obama's campaign is considering moving his nomination acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention from the Pepsi Center to Invesco Field at Mile High to allow tens of thousands to witness the historic moment, sources say. The move would mark a major departure from tradition, but would be in keeping with the candidate's desire to build a large grass-roots campaign focused on ...
It wasn't at all surprising to me that there is a sophisticated volunteer organization dedicated to drafting Al Gore for the Democratic presidential nomination. And it is sophisticated, according to the website: they have 2354 volunteers and 271 groups. And with the continuing reluctance to whole heartedly embrace Hillary Clinton and much dissatisfaction over alternatives Edwards, Obama, Richardson and the rest. Al Gore is the only one who could turn this race upside down. ...
