University Prof Calls for Congressional UFO Hearing

Congress has a full plate of hearings coming up. Everything from medical liability reform, creating and promoting jobs and investigating Internet child pornography to assessing China's behavior and making immigration work for American minorities. Do you think the House or Senate will have any extra time to discuss UFOs? While it sometimes might seem as though our lawmakers are from outer space, this hasn't stopped one college professor from urging Congress to take a serious look at unidentified flying objects. Citing findings from a 12-year-old groundbreaking French UFO study, University of...

Wisconsin Governor Defends Hobbling Unions

WASHINGTON -- Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker defended his school of union hobbling as a route to fiscal discipline to budget-weary Washington on Thursday, telling a House committee that protracted, nail-biting negotiations in tough economic times can produce inaction and bad policy. "Sometimes," the Republican governor told the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, "bipartisanship is not so good." J. Scott Applewhite, AP Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington on Thursday. "Sometimes bipartisanship is not so good," Walker told the House...

US Considers 'All Types' of Help for Libyan Rebels

WASHINGTON -- The White House said Wednesday it is assessing options for "all types of assistance" to Libyan rebels battling Moammar Gadhafi's troops, while frustrated lawmakers quoted senior Obama administration officials as saying the U.S. military's role will be limited. "No decision has been made about providing arms to the opposition or to any groups in Libya," said White House press secretary Jay Carney. "We're not ruling it out or ruling it in." Fresh battlefield setbacks are hardening a U.S. view that the poorly equipped opposition is probably incapable of prevailing without decisive...

US Effort in Libya Costs Hundreds of Millions So Far

WASHINGTON -- Stretched thin by two wars, the U.S. military is spending upward of $1 billion in an international assault to destroy Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's air defenses and save rebels from likely defeat, according to analysts and a rough calculation of the military operation so far. Missiles fired from submarines in the Mediterranean, bombs dropped by B-2 stealth bombers and an array of warplanes launching airstrikes over the northern portion of Libya easily total hundreds of millions of dollars. The campaign entered its fifth day on Wednesday. Anja Niedringhaus,...

Obama: Allies Will Soon Take Control of Libyan Campaign

Facing criticism for taking military action in Libya without first formally consulting Congress, President Obama said Tuesday he is certain U.S. control over the operation would soon be transferred to the allies, news agencies reported. "I have absolutely no doubt that we will be able to transfer control of this operation to an international coalition," Obama said at a press conference in San Salvador with El Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes, Bloomberg reported. Members of NATO are meeting to establish a command structure, which will be done "over the next several days," he...

Obama Getting Heat From Left and Right for U.S. Role in Libyan Attacks

Obama Getting Heat From Left and Right for U.S. Role in Libyan Attacks

President Obama is getting blowback from both sides of the aisle for taking military action in Libya without first formally consulting Congress. Debate in Washington heated up even before reports Tuesday that a U.S. warplane, patrolling Libyan air space, had crashed. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-Md.), a conservative member of the House Armed Services Committee, said Obama's "unilateral choice" to join a U.N.-backed coalition establishing a no-fly zone "is an affront to our Constitution," The Hill newspaper reported. The United States, Bartlett said, "does not have a king's army." Meanwhile, a CBS...

House Rejects Proposal to Pull Troops from Afghanistan

House Rejects Proposal to Pull Troops from Afghanistan

The House on Thursday rejected a proposal calling for the removal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan by the end of the year, news agencies reported. The resolution, sponsored by Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich, was turned down 93 to 321. But The Hill and The Plain Dealer in Cleveland noted it had more support this time than in 2010 when the House rejected a similar Kucinich measure 65 to 356. Kucinich said Congress should assert its authority over the war, though others argued that lawmakers should trust military leaders and President Obama. Support for continued U.S. involvement in Afghanistan has...

Patriot Act: Congress Sends Obama Short-Term Wiretap Authority

Patriot Act: Congress Sends Obama Short-Term Wiretap Authority

Congress gave President Obama what he wanted Thursday: a bill extending federal authority for use of "roving wiretaps" and other surveillance techniques. But the president wanted the so-called Patriot Act continued until 2013 and this extension is only for 90 days. The caution comes from concern over three sections of the broader law: reauthorizing use of moveable wiretaps that don't require multiple court orders; giving the FBI access to tangible items like library records in international cases; and permitting surveillance of "lone wolf" suspects not connected to specific terrorist groups....

Patriot Act Passes House With Wiretap Authority -- a Week After It Was Rejected

Patriot Act Passes House With Wiretap Authority -- a Week After It Was Rejected

What a difference a week makes. House Republican leaders lowered the bar and won approval for extension of the Patriot Act -- complete with its "roving wiretaps" provision -- one week after the bill was rejected by the same body. The difference: This time the bill, which passed on 275-144 vote Monday, needed only a simple majority to advance -- not the two-thirds super-majority required last week when House Speaker John Boehner attempted to zip it through on a fast-track procedure. The Senate followed up Tuesday with a short-term extension. The bill authorizes the FBI to use moveable...

House Rejects Extension of Patriot Act Wiretaps -- for Now at Least

House Rejects Extension of Patriot Act Wiretaps -- for Now at Least

In a setback for the new Republican leadership, the House refused to extend surveillance sections of the Patriot Act that allow government to use roving wiretaps on terror suspects and also gain access to tangible items such as library records. An unlikely alliance of Republicans and Democrats -- joined by a concern for individual liberties -- brought the bill down Tuesday night. It mustered majority support in the 277-148 vote, but fell seven short of the two-thirds needed to pass under a speed-up procedure. GOP leaders blamed Democrats for the measure's defeat and said they had voted...
