Keri Potts' and Lara Logan's Shared Ordeal: Sex Assault Overseas

Keri A. Potts claims membership in an exclusive club. But it's a club she never wanted to join. Potts is a sexual assault survivor. Her ordeal occurred in Rome, but it could have happened anywhere. On a college campus like Notre Dame. At a high school party in Texas. In Egypt while on a journalism assignment. "I'm a sexual assault survivor," said the svelte, curly-haired, 33-year-old. "That's the first time I've said that in a room full of people." Potts was featured speaker at this week's lunchtime lecture at the Clinton School for Public Service in Little Rock, Ark. Potts, an ESPN ...

Obama Won't Defend DOMA: Instant Reactions

President Barack Obama has decided that Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional and has ordered Attorney General Eric Holder to stop defending it in federal court. Until now, the Department of Justice has defended Section 3 of DOMA in court challenges. This section states that "the word 'marriage' means only a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife, and the word 'spouse' refers only to a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or wife." Two DOMA challenges are currently pending in the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. In a letter to Congress ...

Report Casts Doubts on Scientific Findings in Anthrax Case

WASHINGTON -- A report released today on the scientific methods used to investigate the deadly anthrax attacks disputes a key conclusion by the FBI -- and has triggered calls for an independent review of the entire case. Investigators have concluded that government scientist Bruce Ivins mailed anthrax-laden letters to members of Congress and the media in 2001. Five people were killed and 17 others sickened. Ivins committed suicide in July 2008 before charges could be filed. Ivins' attorney said the new report casts doubt on the allegations against the scientist. AP Investigators ...

NYT Editor Unloads on 'Arrogant,' 'Manipulative' Julian Assange

The story of how The New York Times' once-promising relationship with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange turned sour sounds like the kind of mud-slinging breakup between Hollywood celebrities you read about at TMZ.com. Times Executive Editor Bill Keller, in an excerpt from an e-book, writes about his newspaper's rocky partnership with WikiLeaks, tossing as many barbed adjectives at Assange as Camille Grammer has hurled at her soon-to-be ex-husband, Kelsey Grammer. To start with, Keller repeatedly refers to Assange as "our source," although Assange calls himself a journalist and that is key for ...

Opinion: Whose Internet Is It Anyway?

Opinion: Whose Internet Is It Anyway?

(Dec. 2) -- A few days ago I noticed that some of my favorite websites were gone. When I ventured onto entertainment sites like OnSmash and Dajaz1, which feature the latest music, videos and interviews from music artists, I was greeted by the following ominous notice: "This domain name has been seized by the ICE -- Homeland Security Investigations." Homeland Security? Was I partaking in some virtual terrorist cell network under the guise of a Rihanna video? I soon learned these were only a few of the 82 domain names seized by the federal government under the claims that they each engaged in ...

DOJ Drops Ensign Investigation; Republican Still Faces Ethics Panel Probe

Another big break for Sen. John Ensign, after federal prosecutors announced Wednesday the Nevada Republican would not face charges related to payments he made following his extramarital affair with a former campaign staffer. "The Department of Justice has informed us that Senator Ensign is no longer a target of its investigation and that it has no plans to bring any charges against him on this matter," Ensign's lawyers said in statement first obtained by The Las Vegas Sun. Ensign is still the subject of a probe by the Senate ethics committee over his affair with Cynthia Hampton, his former ...

Opinion: 10 Years Later, Our Electoral System Is Still Broken

(Nov. 10) -- Let's face it -- our electoral system is broken. Not completely. In most instances the system does its job and determines a winner. But if the race is close and the outcome determines who gets political power, the cracks in the structure become painfully clear. This was the real lesson of the 2000 presidential recount crisis in Florida: In close elections, when every vote counts, our electoral machinery is not up to the job. Sadly, this lesson was lost in the controversy ignited by the Supreme Court's unprecedented ruling in Bush v. Gore, in which a five-justice majority ...

Today in Voter Fraud: Hysteria or Imminent Threat?

Today in Voter Fraud: Hysteria or Imminent Threat?

(Oct. 27) -- As another election draws near, it's worth asking: Which is the larger problem in America, voter fraud or voter intimidation? On Tuesday, 47 people in Minnesota were charged with voter fraud stemming from the 2008 general election, Minnesota Public Radio reported. That location is significant, as conservative activists have long alleged that Sen. Al Franken was only elected because of voter fraud. Unfortunately for the groups trying to prove that Norm Coleman was the real winner of the contest, initial claims that some 1,250 people had acted to throw the election Franken's way ...

GlaxoSmithKline to Pay $750M Fine for Sale of Bad Drugs

GlaxoSmithKline to Pay $750M Fine for Sale of Bad Drugs

(Oct. 26) -- Another day, another hard pill to swallow for GlaxoSmithKline. On Tuesday, the pharmaceutical giant agreed to pay $750 million to settle a government lawsuit alleging that the company sold defective and potentially dangerous medication. The U.S. Justice Department brought suit against GSK after finding that the company's Cidra, Puerto Rico, factory produced drugs sold to consumers that were often mislabeled, of the wrong dosage and contaminated with micro-organisms. "Today's settlement reminds the pharmaceutical industry that they must observe those standards and reflects ...
