'Zombies Ahead,' Warns Electronic Road Sign in SC

For anyone who doesn't recall the driver's ed section on avoiding undead life forms, you might want to steer clear of South Carolina for a few days. "Zombies Ahead," "Watch for Hunters" and "Be Alert for Tanks" are the three warnings that drivers on Lancaster County's S.C. 160 recently encountered from two seemingly tampered with electronic road signs, the Rock Hill Herald reports. The pair of highway signs, contracted through construction company CR Jackson, were intended to alert drivers of upcoming night road paving scheduled to begin March 27. Opinion: Government Waste by the Numbers

In an organization as big and sprawling as the federal government, it's sometimes hard to grasp the magnitude of the waste that goes on. But the Government Accountability Office has released a report that gets at this problem in a unique way. It looks at government programs with an eye to rooting out duplication and overlap. What it finds should be shocking to anyone concerned with how their tax dollars are spent. Here's a sampling, by the numbers: 2,300 That's the number of different investments spread out across the Defense Department, all sharing the goal of business system ...

Rhode Island Town Has to Police Illegal Stop Signs

(Nov. 30) -- You can get a ticket for not obeying the big red octagon, but if you're driving in Cranston, R.I., there's a chance the stop sign itself is breaking the law. City officials have discovered that 692 of the 2,600 stop signs in the city were put up illegally. Now they're trying to determine what to do about them. Some signs have been in place for decades, possibly installed at the direction of past mayors or by residents without city council approval. "There was talk about removing the illegal ones," Robin Muksian-Schutt, the mayor's director of administration, told AOL News. ...

Opinion: Putting a Face on Distracted Driving's Heavy Toll [VIDEO]

(Nov. 16) -- On this page, we've published several op-eds on the huge toll distracted driving is taking on the country's highways and byways. Traffic safety expert Leonard Evans, for example, noted that "driving while distracted is not like drunk driving -- it is far worse." Drunk drivers tend be on the road at night, when few other people are on the road. But distracted driving is a 24/7 problem, and as a result, "the victims of distracted driving are in all too many cases random road users behaving responsibly." In another piece, Mark Grabowski pointed out how, despite the risks, ...

Campaign Aims to Cut Distracted Driving Crashes

(Nov. 16) -- The federal government is putting the faces of deaths from distracted driving crashes on display, hoping a new online video campaign will scare people straight. The Department of Transportation released three videos today in which a mother, a daughter and a father describe the loss of a relative killed in a distracted driving crash. The department says nearly 5,500 people were killed and 500,000 injured in accidents involving drivers talking on a cell phone or texting. "These people have courageously come forward to share their tragic stories in order to warn others against ...

'Feds Radiating Americans' with Scanners at Road Checkpoints: Is It True?

(Sept. 29) -- Are scanners being employed at roadway checkpoints to "radiate Americans" with dangerous X-rays designed to peer inside their vehicles? Yes, according to Alex Jones conspiratorial website Prison Planet, and this time, the mainstream media agrees, at least in part. In his most recent Google Trends coup, Alex Jones encouraged users to repeatedly search the phrase "feds radiating Americans," to draw attention to Prison Planet reporter Paul Joseph Watson's new article. In it, the author claims that instead of dedicating their efforts to control illegal immigration and drug ...

New York City Turns Dumpsters Into Swimming Pools

New York City Turns Dumpsters Into Swimming Pools

(Aug. 6) -- Turn off those fire hydrants, there's a new way to get wet and keep cool on city streets. Dumpsters. A New York City design company has remodeled the ubiquitous giant curbside trash bins for a second life as swimming pools -- and in some cases they come with add-on cabanas and barbecue grills. Perhaps adding a new meaning to the term "Dumpster diving," the truck-borne trash bins were tested at private pool parties in Brooklyn last summer. But this weekend they will make their debut on Manhattan's Park Avenue as part of a New York City street festival. NYC DOT A group of ...

Airline Add-On Fees Need More Disclosure, Watchdog Says

The government needs to do a better job of making sure travelers know about the numerous fees that airlines are tacking onto ticket prices, a watchdog organization said Wednesday. The add-ons are making it hard for consumers to comparison-shop for the best ticket price. The Government Accountability Office, an investigative arm of Congress, said U.S. Transportation officials should require more disclosure of the fees, not only from the airlines but also from travel agencies. In addition to charging for bags, some carriers are also nailing consumers for carry-on baggage, blankets, snacks and ...

New Federal Aviation Rules Could Mean More Canceled Flights

New Federal Aviation Rules Could Mean More Canceled Flights

Late last year the government announced it would impose multimillion-dollar fines against airlines that leave passengers stranded on the tarmac for more than three hours. Aviation experts have studied the potential impacts of those fines and determined they could lead to more flight cancellations, USA Today reported. The Department of Transportation said airlines would pay $27,500 per passenger for long delays, fines that could reach into the millions for full flights. Canceling the flight would cost far less, since the airlines save on fuel and passengers have already paid for ...

Transportation Department Limits Runway Delays to 3 Hours

In response to several recent incidents that left airline passengers stranded on delayed planes, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced Monday that airlines will now have to allow customers to deplane after three hours on the tarmac. "Airline passengers have rights, and these new rules will require airlines to live up to their obligation to treat their customers fairly," Secretary LaHood said in a statement. The new rule says airlines will also have to provide adequate food and drinking water after two hours of delay, and maintain working lavatories. Exceptions are allowed if air ...
