Pepsi may need to can this marketing plan. The beverage company has unveiled its new "skinny" can for Fashion Week, a "taller, sassier" take on the classic soda can that the company calls a "celebration of beautiful, confident women." "Our slim, attractive new can is the perfect complement to today's most stylish looks, and we're excited to throw its coming-out party during the biggest celebration of innovative design in the world," PepsiCo chief marketing officer Jill Beraud said in a statement. But as some consumers embrace the new can, critics including the National Eating Disorders ...
Walk into any corner store in an inner city and you'll probably see a similar sight: some chips, candy bars, maybe cleaning supplies, lottery tickets, cigarettes and a few other sundries. Romano's Grocery in Philadelphia, however, is a little different. There are fresh fruits and vegetables, glistening meats, fish and healthy bread. And perhaps most importantly, there's Juan Carlos Romano himself, a grocer who's there to help the customers work their way through his offerings. Romano was the first client of Urbane Development, a group that helps inner-city bodega owners transform their ...
Today the Food and Drug Administration declined to approve Contrave, a new prescription weight-loss drug that an FDA advisory panel had recommended for approval. The FDA ruling on Contrave told drugmaker Orexigen Therapeutics that the agency was concerned about long-term use and potential implications on heart health. Orexigen has been ordered to prove, via additional trials, that Contrave's benefits are not outweighed by its cardiovascular risks. Such rigorous studies will be costly and could take years to complete. Orexigen said in a statement that the company plans to "work closely" with ...
With the new year here and Americans everywhere trying to lose weight, the federal government's new dietary guidelines released today call for cutbacks in salt as well as in calories from added sugar and solid fats like butter. The guidelines, which come out every five years, tell people 51 and older, all blacks and people with hypertension, diabetes and chronic kidney disease to cut their salt intake to 1,500 milligrams, or a little more than half a teaspoon a day. The recommendation for sodium applies to about half the U.S. population; everyone else should be limited to less than ...
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee knows a thing or two about obesity. Huckabee, who lost more than 100 pounds after learning in 2003 that he had diabetes, says fellow Republican Sarah Palin maybe doesn't get it when it comes to First Lady Michelle Obama's campaign against childhood obesity. Huckabee, a once and possibly future presidential candidate, told New York radio host Curtis Sliwa that Obama is on to something important. "With all due respect to my colleague and friend Sarah Palin, I think she's misunderstood what Michelle Obama is trying to do," Huckabee said. "Michelle Obama's not ...
(Nov. 30) -- Dietary guidelines being released today call for a slight increase in the amount of vitamin D people need every day for good health but warn against megadoses of the "sunshine vitamin," saying there's no proof they prevent cancer and that they could in fact be harmful. "More is not necessarily better," Dr. Joann Manson of Harvard Medical School, who co-authored the report, told The Associated Press. The report from the prestigious Institute of Medicine says most people in the U.S. and Canada from ages 1 to 70 need 600 international units of vitamin D daily. That's up from the ...
(Nov. 9) -- No doctor is going to tell Rush Limbaugh to lay off the pastries. The conservative radio host may, in fact, treat himself to a double helping of the sweet stuff in light of new research from Kansas State University professor of human nutrition Mark Haub, who lost 27 pounds over two months while dieting on a daily ration of 1,800 calories of Twinkies, Little Debbie snacks and other delectable junk food. On his radio program on Monday, Limbaugh was beside himself while weighing in on the findings, rejoicing over his anti-exercise stance and citing former Indianapolis Colts wide ...
