She joined her sister and mother in front of the television in their Arlington, Mass., home to watch the nuptials taking place across the Atlantic. "I was 13 ... ripe for romantic fantasies," she told AOL News. "I'm sure we had scones, tea, strawberries and jam. That may even have been my first introduction to clotted cream." Now a fundraiser at a Washington, D.C.-area nonprofit and, like the late Diana, mother of two ...
What will this mean for Bieber fever? As the Oscars after-parties went on into the night on Sunday, millions of Justin Bieber fans faced the inevitable as news spread that the teen heart throb was seen holding hands and smooching with his date, Selena Gomez. The tabloids even snapped pictures of the young lovebirds reportedly leaving a hotel together the morning after. So who is this 18-year-old interloper causing such waves in the Bieber universe? No more rocking for "Guitar Hero." Activision Blizzard Inc., the company behind the music game, said today that it is discontinuing its "Guitar Hero" franchise and laying off employees. Fans won't get a chance to play the 2011 version of the game, which was in development. Eric Hirshberg, Activision's CEO, told analysts on a conference call that it was purely a business decision. "We simply cannot make these games profitably based on current economics," he said. Activision plans to refocus its efforts on digital and online gaming. Clearly, it's a tough time for the music gaming world. ...
Blackyyee the penguin is a masterful tuber, staying atop his float while jumping over objects that might fell a lesser bird. Beach balls, periscopes, ice chunks, green glass bottles, frogs on lily pads: Blackyyee clears them all, a click-click accompanying every successful leap. Slate PR Kids who play Club Penguin helped fund a new school in Haiti, which includes a mural, above, and a playground. Blackyyee owes his success to Daniel Trainor, 5. In the water, on the sledding course, in a martial arts-esque game called "Card-Jitsu," every move Blackyyee makes is at the behest of ...
A week or so ago, thousands of Facebook users changed their identifying photos to cartoon characters in a vague attempt to "raise awareness" of child abuse. Ironically, at the same time a new hit movie was using animation to focus on the same subject in a more sophisticated manner. The movie? Disney's "Tangled." No kidding. Slipped inside the gorgeous images, entertaining songs and fairy-tale narrative is a clear-eyed look at the way predatory abusers maintain control of their victims. The villain may be Disney's skin-crawlingly nastiest because her evil is so un-magically human. [SPOILER ...
(Dec. 2) -- Murder has hit the community that Disney designed as an ultra-American wonderland. But while Celebration may feature Bing Crosby-laced foliage and front-porch rocking chairs, this isn't the first time the harsh realities of the rest of the world have crept into the Utopian community. The Walt Disney Co. developed the central Florida town in the late 1990s to be a real-world manifestation of its midcentury image of American values, as if "Main Street, USA" inside Disney World had become a fully functioning community. Designed for low-density, upscale housing, the town looks like a ...
(Sept. 16) -- Controversial private security firm Xe (nee Blackwater) has long had a checkered reputation. Now a new article in the leftist magazine The Nation says that in addition to its involvement in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Blackwater operated through a related firm called Total Intelligence Solutions to perform work for a range of American corporations with international dealings, including Monsanto, Chevron, Royal Caribbean cruises and Walt Disney. The article is by Jeremy Scahill, author of "Blackwater." In it, he reports that Total Intelligence was hired to do a "threat ...
ANAHEIM, Calif. (Aug. 19) -- A Muslim woman who works as a hostess at a Disneyland restaurant alleged Wednesday the theme park would not allow her to appear in front of customers while wearing her head scarf. Imane Boudlal, 26, appeared outside the resort's Grand Californian Hotel after filing a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. She said when she wore the hijab to work Sunday, her supervisors told her to remove it, work where customers couldn't see her, or go home. Boudlal, who wore the scarf in observance of Ramadan, chose to go home but reported to work ...
The news that Target donated $150,000 to a group supporting an anti-gay Minnesota gubernatorial candidate presents a conundrum. Growing up in the Midwest, one of the highlights of the Sunday newspaper was the Target circular: What's on sale this week? When my stepdaughter moved to Grand Junction, Colo., for a time a few years ago, her first complaint was this: "There's only one Target." Even jaded Manhattanites are reveling in the opening of their first Target store in East Harlem. There's something about the tidy, bright aisles of clothing, cosmetics, kitchenware, household goods -- well, ...
