Now that Republicans are running the House, Democrats have tried to stymie the GOP agenda by relying on the tactic, known as the motion to recommit. But they've failed on every one of their 23 attempts this year. That motion is almost always the last step just before the final vote on a bill. It gives the minority party, which has little voice and few rights in the House, a last chance to ...
WASHINGTON -- The budget deal lawmakers struck to avoid a government shutdown was greeted by some with relief, but it has one city already reeling: the capital itself. City officials say Washington was used as a pawn last week's budget bargaining, with new restrictions part of the price of a deal. Angry that Congress appears ready to take away autonomy granted to the city in the last several years, Mayor Vincent Gray and six Council members including the chairman were among 41 people arrested Monday outside the Capitol while protesting the changes that might be inevitable. Seven hours later, ...
LAS VEGAS -- First it was medicinal marijuana use. Then immigration reform. And now at least six states, most notably Nevada and California, are on the brink of taking action where they believe the federal government has failed -- legalizing Internet poker. Bills are percolating in legislatures across the country that would formally permit residents to play poker online within state boundaries, an effort to circumvent a 2006 federal law that crippled the fast-growing Web gambling industry. The bill most likely to be adopted first appears to be the one sponsored by Nevada Assemblyman William ...
The Census Bureau has released its final figures for the 2010 count, revealing new details about the makeup of the 308.7 million people in the United States and how they live. Here are five insights about America's racial mix that emerge from the report: 1. The geography of race The minority population, driven by a 43 percent increase in Hispanics, grew in all four regions of the country. But it grew most in the West. Nearly half of the West's population of 33.9 million is now minority. That is largely due to California, which also has the largest minority population of any state: 22.3 ...
The strange, sudden death of Washington, D.C., lobbyist Ashley Turton has left many people in the nation's capital grieving. Investigators say they are waiting for lab results that will help determine why Turton died after her SUV caught fire in her garage. According to a D.C. Fire Department spokesman, it's possible that Turton hit something as she was backing out of the garage. The fire was probably sparked by a flammable substance in the garage, perhaps something stored on a workbench near her vehicle. While accident details remain under investigation, Turton's friends and colleagues have ...
WASHINGTON (Oct. 28) -- The FBI decided to end its sting and arrest a Northern Virginia man now charged with plotting to blow up D.C. -area subway stations because it was concerned he was about to leave the country to go on pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, according to a court document and law enforcement sources. FBI agents arrested Farooque Ahmed, 34, of Ashburn, Va., on Wednesday on charges that he conspired with people he thought were al-Qaida operatives to blow up the Arlington National Cemetery, Pentagon City, Crystal City and Court House subway stations in Northern Virginia. In some other ...
(Oct. 20) -- At least six shots were fired at the Pentagon on Tuesday by a still-unidentified party, not two as was originally reported. Investigators originally found two windows on the exterior of the building that had been hit by one bullet each. But today, Steven Calvery, director of the Pentagon Force Protection Agency, said the investigation has determined that four additional bullets hit the Pentagon's facade, according to CNN. Authorities are continuing their search for the gunman today. Calvery said Tuesday he thought the shooting was "a random event." (D.C. has a notoriously high ...
(Oct. 1) -- Many have expressed umbrage at comedian Stephen Colbert appearing -- largely in character -- before a congressional panel to discuss migrant farmworkers. But of course his celebrity status brought attention, however briefly, to the plight of these farmworkers, many of whom are illegal immigrants. And his most salient point was made out of character, when he said: I like talking about people who don't have any power, and it seems like one of the least powerful people in the United States are migrant workers who come and do our work but don't have any rights as a result. But yet we ...
"Sterilize black women, problem solved." That is just one comment -- with plenty of recommends -- that accompanies a Washington Post story on poor children in Washington, D.C., and its suburbs. The article uses census statistics to show three out of 10 children in the District live in poverty, "with the number of poor African American children rising at a breathtaking rate." The details of the piece are horrifying, asides from readers even worse. I didn't need a story -- though the Associated Press has written one -- to tell me that the anonymous dialogue tagged onto web articles has ...
