NEW YORK -- Mariah Carey says she was unaware that she was booked to perform a concert linked to Gadhafi's clan -- and she's embarrassed "to have participated in this mess." Carey is among a handful of entertainers who were paid handsome fees to give exclusive private concerts. It was later revealed the people behind those concerts were the family of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, whose country is in an open revolt against him and who faces an investigation for possible war crimes. This week, Nelly Furtado announced she is giving the $1 million fee she was paid in 2007 to charity; Beyonce ...
ATLANTA - A couple's unusual move to donate the bride's wedding ring -- believed to be worth several thousand dollars -- during the Salvation Army's annual kettle drive will help food banks and other programs after it is auctioned off. The couple, who are trying to guard their identity, walked up to a bell ringer on Dec. 22 and handed her a package with the ring and a note on the back that said although the two were still deeply in love that the Salvation Army could make better use of the diamond ring than they could. The brief note closed with the words "All for Jesus." "She wanted to make ...
If two Mississippi sisters serving life in prison for an armed robbery that netted $11 want to go free, one will have to donate a kidney to the other. Gov. Haley Barbour has pardoned Gladys and Jamie Scott, black women whose case has been a cause celebre among civil rights activists. But to be released, Gladys, 36, must donate a kidney to her 38-year-old sister, Jamie, who requires dialysis and needs a transplant. There was no grumbling about the odd condition of the Scotts' release. Their lawyer called the governor's decision a victory and noted that Gladys Scott had already planned to ...
(Oct. 26) -- Liberal investing giant George Soros already commanded quite a reputation, for good and for ill: "The Man Who Broke the Bank of England" in the early 1990s was also a sworn enemy of George W. Bush and Fox News in the United States, and more recently, a generous donor to Media Matters and National Public Radio (you know, the station that fired Juan Williams -- yes, some conservatives are drawing a connection). But now he can add another feather to his cap: that of legalized pot promoter. "Our marijuana laws are clearly doing more harm than good," Soros begins in a widely ...

But on Monday there was nothing but smiles at the Barnum Museum in Bridgeport, Conn., when a pair of circus performers showed up with a $10,000 gift. The money was presented by Feld Entertainment, producers of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, in honor of P.T. Barnum's 200th birthday Monday. Like my PD colleague Christine Wicker, I was also fascinated by the story of Henrietta Lacks, whose cells became laboratory staples due to their unusual ability to divide seemingly perpetually. Lacks died nearly 60 years ago from cervical cancer, but, before she died, her doctor took samples of her cells, and they are now in common usage for everything from creating polio vaccines to in vitro fertilization. Lacks' story, and that of her cells (known as HeLa cells), are told in a new book, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," by Rebecca Skloots. Beyond the cells themselves, there's one ...
via the IHT:A developer in New York state donated $100,000 to former President Bill Clinton's foundation in November 2004, around the same time that Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton helped secure millions of dollars in federal assistance for the businessman's mall project. Hillary Clinton helped enact legislation allowing the developer, Robert Congel, to use tax-exempt bonds to help finance the construction of the Destiny USA entertainment and shopping complex, an expansion of the Carousel Center in Syracuse. She also helped secure a provision in a highway bill that set aside $5 million for ...
