Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! One month after an earthquake and tsunami struck Japan, donors in the United States have contributed nearly a quarter of a billion dollars, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy. A tally of dozens of nonprofits by the philanthropic journal shows Americans have contributed more than $246.9 million to relief and recovery efforts. The American Red Cross continues to account for roughly 69 percent of the total raised. Despite these impressive-sounding totals, fundraising in the wake of the twin Japanese disasters lags behind funds raised after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti and Hurricane ...

In all, 20 NBA players have committed to supporting the Direct Relief's effort to help the people of Japan recover from the devastating earthquake and tsunami of March 11. Scott ...
The name Moammar Gadhafi has become so poisonous that everyone from singer Nelly Furtado and the London School of Economics to high-powered PR firms and lobbyists are trying to erase past dealings with him. Furtado said she plans to give away to charity the $1 million she earned for performing in private for the Gadhafi family in 2007. There are increasing calls for Beyonce, Usher, Mariah Carey and 50 Cent, all of whom reportedly performed for high fees for Gadhafi's relatives, to take a stand as well, the BBC reported. Public relations firms and lobbyists who have collected eye-popping fees ...
When an American Red Cross employee accidentally tweeted a beer-related post to the charity's Twitter account, rather than to her personal account, the Red Cross responded with humor. The casual, positive handling of the incident has inspired a slew of Web donations. "Ryan found two more 4 bottle packs of Dogfish Head's Midas Touch beer.... when we drink we do it right #gettngslizzerd." Gloria Huang, apparent fan of Delaware craft brewery Dogfish Head and social media specialist for the American Red Cross, tweeted the post to the wrong account late Tuesday night. For those not up on their ...
Buoyed by record sales in 2010, Subaru of America is giving $5 million to five charities, including animal cruelty prevention, youth mentoring and environmental protection, thanks to owners of new vehicles. Thursday's announcement makes a total of $15 million in donations over three years for the automaker, it announced in a press release. Receiving funds are the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), Big Brothers Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels Association of America and Ocean Conservancy. This latest round of giving is the result of the ...
Lowe's is giving green to the green. Visitors to Lowes.com/give and Lowe's Facebook page will vote between now and Jan. 21 to decide which organization receives what proportion of the $600,000. "We wanted to make sure that each charity got something, so that's why we decided to give them $100,000," said spokeswoman Katie Cody. She told AOL News that the four organizations' missions ...
The mouse-clicking fingers of charitable Americans deserve a rest come Saturday. According to a new study examining online giving, the last two days of December are to charities what Cyber Monday is to online retailers: a major boost to the bottom line. Conducted by online giving platform Network for Good and TrueSense Marketing, the Online Giving Study revealed that charitable giving spikes during natural disasters and during December, with more than 20 percent of the year's online gifts coming in under the wire, on Dec. 30 and 31. While these two unique events spark giving surges, the ...
Donald Trump. Howie Mandel. Howard Stern. What do these famous faces have in common besides celebrity? Believe it or not, they all suffer from obsessive-compulsive disorder, a mental ailment affecting millions that hasn't quite made it into the Hollywood spotlight. That's all about to change, however, thanks to filmmaker Kellie Madison, who's on a mission to make a narrative film about OCD titled "Machine Man." Courtesy of Madison Films Filmmaker Kellie Madison is determined to make a narrative film about obssesive compulsive disorder; she just needs the funds for the ...
JERUSALEM -- Ronald L. Gallatin is a retired attorney, a CPA and a former managing director at Lehman Brothers credited with creating some of Wall Street's most ingenious investment instruments. His wife, Meryl, is a prominent philanthropist in Florida charity circles. But when they visit Israel, they prefer hanging around soup kitchens and drug addict drop-in centers rather than fancy restaurants. Over the past seven years, the Gallatins have given more than $2 million of their own money and raised more than $4 million from friends for a charity they set up "to fill in the cracks" left by ...
(Nov. 5) -- Like a bad segment on MSNBC's "Countdown," the Keith Olbermann suspension episode (which may rapidly transition into the Keith Olbermann firing episode) just keeps on getting more outlandish. Late this afternoon, the unapologetically left- (sorry, "forward") leaning cable news show host was unceremoniously suspended by his network without pay, indefinitely, following the revelation that he gave undisclosed campaign contributions to Democratic candidates running in the 2010 midterms. Hours later, his supposed interim replacement, Chris Hayes, was yanked from the show as well, but ...
