Prenatal Blood Test Shown to Detect Down Syndrome [VIDEO]

NEW YORK -- Scientists in Europe report they were able to diagnose Down syndrome prenatally by giving a simple blood test to pregnant women, an approach that might one day help them avoid the more extensive procedure used now to detect the condition. The preliminary report published online Sunday in the journal Nature Medicine is the latest of several recent studies that suggest scientists can spot Down syndrome through fetal DNA that has been shed into the mother's bloodstream. Down syndrome, which results in cognitive delays, is caused by having an extra copy of a particular ...

Kathy Ireland: The Tragic Shortfall in Down Syndrome Research

Courtesy Kathy Ireland Kathy Ireland (Oct. 11) -- Three months ago, my niece Polly was born. In the short time since, she's already undergone one extensive surgery to repair two holes in heart. And we've now learned that she has one additional opening on her heart that may or may not close without further surgery. Like one out of every 800 babies born in the U.S., Polly has Down syndrome. Sarah Palin: 'Family Guy' Cartoon Was a 'Kick in the Gut'

It's only a cartoon, but still . . . Sarah Palin is angry at Fox Broadcasting Co. because its saucy cartoon show "Family Guy" portrayed a teenage girl with Down syndrome telling another character that her mom is the former governor of Alaska. A song and dance routine followed, with language ridiculing people with disabilities, CNN said. Palin, the former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate, has a 22-month-old son with Down syndrome. She said she was too ticked off to respond personally --"felt like another kick in the gut," she said -- so on Palin's Facebook page ...

Sarah Palin Tells the Angry Mob to Calm Down

Sarah Palin, the former governor of Alaska and the former candidate for vice president of the United States, has a message for the incensed protesters of President Obama's proposed health care reform: Chill out. After witnessing a spate of confrontational, sometimes violent, exchanges at town-hall meetings, Palin posted the following statement on her Facebook page (Via Ben Smith): "There are many disturbing details in the current bill that Washington is trying to run through Congress, but we must stick to a discussion of the issues and not get sidetracked by tactics that can be accused of ...
