Opinion: We Can't Drill Our Way Out of High Gas Prices

Opinion: We Can't Drill Our Way Out of High Gas Prices

As the price of oil soars above $100 a barrel, Americans are experiencing sticker shock at the pump and economists are concerned about our fledgling economic recovery. Solutions exist that can get us off the oil market roller coaster, but they won't be found in more domestic oil fields. No matter how vocal the drilling supporters become, they still won't be able to address America's acute vulnerability to the whims of the global oil market. America consumes roughly one-quarter of the world's oil, yet we are home to less than 2 percent of the globe's proven oil reserves. So much for "Drill, ...

Swarm of Quakes Rattles Arkansas Residents and Seismologists

Dozens of small earthquakes have rattled towns in Arkansas in the past few days, puzzling seismologists who say the exact cause of the tremors is unclear. The U.S. Geological Service has reported at least 40 earthquakes in the northern Arkansas towns of Greenbrier and Guy this week -- 18 on Wednesday alone. Since October, the area has seen nearly 700 earthquakes. No injuries or damage have been reported. The earthquakes, although small -- generally ranging from 1.8 to 3.5 in magnitude -- appear to be increasing in strength. This morning, residents in the Greenbrier, about 50 miles north of ...

Obama Bans New East Coast Offshore Drilling: 3 Possible Reasons

Obama Bans New East Coast Offshore Drilling: 3 Possible Reasons

(Dec. 1) -- Don't drill, baby, don't drill. Reversing its pre-BP oil spill disaster position, the Obama administration announced today that it will not engage in offshore drilling on the East Coast of the U.S. and the eastern Gulf of Mexico region, according to The Associated Press. The original policy, announced three weeks before the gulf oil spill, would have permitted authorized drilling from the Delaware coast to waters near central Florida, as well as in northern Alaska. The new policy, however, does maintain the possibility for drilling near Alaska. "Our revised strategy lays out a ...

What Caused the Earthquake in Oklahoma?

What Caused the Earthquake in Oklahoma?

(Oct. 13) -- Sooner shakeup! Residents of Oklahoma were jolted this morning by something entirely unexpected: an earthquake that struck the state around 9 a.m. local time, damaging several buildings, causing minor injuries and rattling people in five other states. The quake was centered five miles east-northeast of Noble and eight miles southeast of Norman. The U.S. Geological Survey originally categorized the quake at 4.3 magnitude, but the Oklahoma Geological Survey later came out with its own assessment of 5.1 (for comparison, the quake that devastated Haiti earlier this year was ...

Greenpeace Activists in Chocolate Sauce Protest Deep-Water Drilling

Greenpeace Activists in Chocolate Sauce Protest Deep-Water Drilling

(Oct. 4) -- Occasionally, you'll hear of people slathering themselves in chocolate sauce because they're feeling a bit kinky -- not because they're making a political statement. Bikini-clad activists in France covered themselves in fake oil to voice a simple message: Oil and water don't mix. Demonstrators from the environmental group Greenpeace put on bathing suits and doused themselves with mock petroleum on Saturday to protest deep-water drilling and a controversial plan to extract oil from oil-bearing sands. According to the Greenpeace website, the demonstrators gathered in Paris, ...

Gulf Coast Residents Still Support Oil Drilling Despite Spill, Poll Finds

Gulf Coast Residents Still Support Oil Drilling Despite Spill, Poll Finds

Despite the significant economic, environmental and emotional toll of the BP oil spill, residents of the Gulf Coast still overwhelmingly support off-shore drilling, according to a new poll. Three-quarters of respondents in a ABC News-Washington Post survey released Wednesday said drilling should resume at its existing level, or be expanded. And by a margin of 60-38 percent, residents of Gulf states are against the six-month moratorium on drilling ordered Monday by the White House. This poll was based on results among 1,288 respondents nationally and from an extra sample of randomly ...

Offshore Drilling Projects Move Forward Despite Moratorium

Government regulators have granted seven permits for various types of drilling and five environmental waivers since President Obama announced a moratorium on offshore drilling projects, the New York Times reports. On May 14, in response to the massive oil spill at a BP well in the Gulf of Mexico, Obama announced a halt to new deepwater drilling projects and the end of the full waiver of environmental review BP received for its Deepwater Horizon rig. Since the well exploded on April 20, the Department of the Interior has granted 19 environmental waivers for gulf drilling projects and 17 ...

House Dems to Let Drilling Ban Expire

House Dems to Let Drilling Ban Expire

Sources in the House of Representatives are reporting that House Democrats are set to allow the Congressional ban on offshore drilling expire at the end of the month when the fiscal year ends. If the report turns out to be accurate, it would represent an epic political victory for Republicans and underscore just how seriously the American people's demand for increased development of American energy sources shook Democrats' expectations for the fall elections. A House staffer said in an e-mail that House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey (D-WI) is telling reporters that Democrats on ...
