Fires Rage, Drought Intensifies in Southern Plains, Southwest

Fires Rage, Drought Intensifies in Southern Plains, Southwest

While much of the country has been hit with flooding rain, dangerous thunderstorms and even late-season snow, just the opposite in the Southwest and Southern Plains has resulted in a decidedly different problem: extreme drought and wildfires. Extremely dry ground and vegetation, very low humidity and strong winds are fueling numerous fires in eastern New Mexico, western and northern Texas and Oklahoma. More than 360,000 acres of land have been burned nationally by ongoing fires this week, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. More than 900,000 acres have been burned so far this ...

Crews Battle Wildfires Amid Severe Texas Drought

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Firefighters battled Monday to contain several large blazes that have burned hundreds of square miles of rural Texas and destroyed dozens of homes since last week, getting reinforcements from out of state as they struggled against some of the worst wildfire conditions in state history. Powerful winds that sent walls of flame through parched ranchland in and around the West Texas communities of Fort Davis and Midland, incinerating more than 60 homes during the weekend and killing livestock and horses, took pity by directing the fires to largely unpopulated open spaces north ...

Will Wild Winter Give Way to a Stormy Spring?

Will Wild Winter Give Way to a Stormy Spring?

Celebrated weather prognosticator Punxsutawney Phil seems to have been reasonably accurate in his prediction of an early spring back on Feb. 2, at a time when most of the country was in the grip of a seemingly unending winter. But the stretch of more moderate weather this past month or so, especially in the eastern half of the country, doesn't mean that the weather has calmed down, with snow and cold in the West and flooding and thunderstorms from the Plains to the East. And it's unlikely that the transition to spring, beginning at 7:21 p.m. EDT on Sunday, will be smooth. Increased Tornado ...

Swollen Rivers Spread Flood Risks Across US -- Even in Drought Areas

Swollen Rivers Spread Flood Risks Across US -- Even in Drought Areas

Numerous rivers in the Plains, Midwest, Deep South and Northeast are at risk for flooding through the remainder of the week, even in areas suffering from drought and where little rain has fallen recently. The flooding in the Deep South might seem surprising since the region is experiencing a widespread, intense drought. However, recent heavy rainfall over a small portion of the region, combined with water flowing into rivers upstream where rain has been persistent, has resulted in local flooding. This includes parts of the Mississippi River and Alabama River, where flooding advisories and ...

Little Relief Seen From Extreme Drought in South

Little Relief Seen From Extreme Drought in South

With most of the winter storms tracking to the north, the long-term drought in the southern United States has intensified and expanded, reaching extreme levels in some areas from Texas to Florida. While the coming storms might provide some relief, drought-breaking rain is not likely through the remainder of the winter, and the overall weather pattern might mean that the drought will further intensify heading into the warm season. (Image courtesy of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) The temporary change in the weather pattern -- the same one likely to produce its share of ...

Israel Brings Deadly Wildfire Under Control

Israel Brings Deadly Wildfire Under Control

JERUSALEM (Dec. 5) -- Israeli officials said an inferno that has raged for four days in a northern Israeli forest was under control by nightfall, helped in part by the world's largest flying fire extinguisher - a Boeing 747 from the U.S. carrying 20,000 gallons of water and fire retardants that joined the efforts on Sunday. Two teenage brothers were arrested Saturday in connection with the country's worst forest fire, which has killed 41 people, most of them prison guards whose bus was trapped by the flames while they were en route to evacuate a prison. The blaze has been tearing through the ...

Soon We'll Be Drinking Recycled Pee; Some of Us Already Are

Soon We'll Be Drinking Recycled Pee; Some of Us Already Are

(Nov. 1) -- Someday, millions of Americans will be drinking their own urine, says Robert Roy Britt, managing editor of LiveScience.com, a news site that prides itself on the provocative approach it takes to science. In a recent commentary for the site, Britt, based in arid Phoenix, said that because of imminent drought in the West, many people will have to rely on treated sewage -- containing human waste -- for their drinking water. "We now have too many people living in places where we don't have fresh water," Britt told AOL News. As an example, Britt cited the Phoenix area, which gets its ...

How Big of a Splash Did International Blog Action Day Make?

How Big of a Splash Did International Blog Action Day Make?

(Oct. 15) -- The word "blog" and "action" might not seem like a natural fit, especially given Malcom Gladwell's notoriously pessimistic new piece on the Web's ability to affect social change. But today is change.org's International Blog Action Day, where blogs across the country are meant to be highlighting water issues in the US and abroad. Some are saying that fresh water could become the "next oil" as a hotly contested scarce resource. And unlike oil, need water to survive under any circumstances, and the world's resources are becoming increasingly contaminated and contentious as ...

Australia's River Restoration Conundrum Highlights Global Water Problem

Australia's River Restoration Conundrum Highlights Global Water Problem

(Oct. 8) -- Australia's government is facing a tricky political dilemma as it considers a plan that would lower the amount of water used to irrigate farmland in an attempt to restore the nation's rivers. The country's farmers have been suffering for years from record drought, and yet many still doubt that human-induced global climate change has any role in their, and the country's, suffering. Under the new plan, farmers in Australia's major food bowl, the Murray-Darling, would see their water supplies cut by as much as 37 percent. And while the government would buy back water licenses from ...
