Rep. Darrell Issa Sacks Key Aide in E-Mail Flap

Rep. Darrell Issa, chairman of a powerful House investigative panel, said Tuesday he fired one of his top aides after discovering that the communications specialist had been sharing reporters' e-mails with a New York Times writer. Issa (R-Calif.) said it was clear that Deputy Communications Director Kurt Bardella shared "reporter e-mail correspondence with New York Times journalist Mark Leibovich for a book project." Bardella's dealings were limited and involved only e-mails shipped to him, Issa said. But the "actions were highly inappropriate, a basic breach of trust with the reporters it ...

WikiLeaks Founder Says Next Target Is Major US Bank

WikiLeaks Founder Says Next Target Is Major US Bank

(Nov. 30) -- WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange says big business is next. Early next year, WikiLeaks will publish tens of thousands of internal documents from a major U.S. bank, exposing the institution's rampant corruption and unethical practices and executives' brazen self-interest, Assange said in an exclusive interview with Forbes magazine. "It will give a true and representative insight into how banks behave at the executive level in a way that will stimulate investigations and reforms," Assange said in an interview conducted before this past weekend's leak of diplomatic memos. "It's ...

The Death of JournoList: Does Privacy End at the Edge of Your Thoughts?

The Death of JournoList: Does Privacy End at the Edge of Your Thoughts?

The life and death of a 3-year-old members-only online liberal bulletin board is a story that normally would offer all the searing drama of a public television pledge drive. But the sudden collapse of JournoList Friday afternoon -- after the private e-mails of Washington Post blogger Dave Weigel were maliciously leaked -- offers a cautionary tale about the dangers of candor in an age when everybody (and not just Big Brother) is watching. Founded in early 2007 by the youthful Ezra Klein, now a columnist for The Washington Post, JournoList was a private bull session which brought together ...

Todd Palin Had Big Role in Sarah's Politics

(Feb. 5) -- Newly released e-mails show that Todd Palin, Sarah Palin's husband, played an active role during her term as Alaska governor and in her campaign for vice president. Some 1,200 e-mails released to NBC News by the state of Alaska show that Todd Palin's role in policymaking was far-reaching. According to NBC News, "The governor's husband got involved in a judicial appointment, monitored contract negotiations with public employee unions, received background checks on a corporate CEO, added his approval or disapproval to state board appointments and passed financial information marked ...

State Lawmaker's Son Subject of E-Mail Probe

State Lawmaker's Son Subject of E-Mail Probe

Shocking new revelations in the Palin e-mail hacking case are currently breaking. The lone gunman angle looks to be panning out. As best as I can sift the information currently, a single user has been identified as the target of the investigation: the son of a Democratic member of the Tennessee House, Rep. Mike Kernell! Putting the events together, it seems the suspect allegedly posted the information to the Anonymous groups at website 4chan, then backed away from his involvement at some point. It is not clear if he was the person who forwarded the information to website Wikileaks, which ...

Missing WH E-Mails Likely Won't Be Recovered

Missing WH E-Mails Likely Won't Be Recovered

An internal White House memo describing the process for hiring a private contractor to retrieve up to 225 days worth of missing e-mails indicates that the lost communications may not be recovered before the Bush Administration's term expires in January, 2009, if at all. Democrats in Congress want a look at the internal White House communications as part of their investigations into the firing of eight U.S. Attorneys in 2006. Democrats believe that the e-mails will show a greater than acknowledged involvement in the firings by White House officials such as former political director Karl ...

White House: E-Mail Recovery Plan 'Fruitless'

White House: E-Mail Recovery Plan 'Fruitless'

The U.S. attorney purge of 2006 spawned several mini-scandals. One of them is a controversy over missing Bush administration email. Over five million e-mails sent via a non-government domain, which is not legal, have not been accounted for by the White House. They're probably not going to be. Yesterday, the White House disclosed in federal court that older White House computer hard drives have been destroyed. They argued that a recovery plan ordered by the court would be "fruitless." ...

White House E-Mails Gone for Good

White House E-Mails Gone for Good

The Republican National Committee informed a House investigative committee yesterday that it not longer planned to retrieve lost White House e-mails. The RNC had previously told the House Committee on Government Reform and Oversight that it was attempting to locate e-mail records from the 2001-2003 time period by restoring computer backup tapes. Prior to 2004, the RNC had a policy of deleting e-mails from all of its accounts after 30 days. This policy extended to White House officials who held RNC e-mail accounts.Democrats have been investigating whether Bush Administration officials complied ...

White House Ordered to Preserve E-Mails

White House Ordered to Preserve E-Mails

A Federal judge ruled yesterday that the White House must preserve all e-mails it generates or receives on back-up tapes. The ruling will allow investigators to determine whether the Administration is in violation of the Federal Records Act, a law that prohibits destruction of Federal documents unless approved by the National Archives. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) and the National Security Archive allege in separate lawsuits that over 5 million e-mails have been lost or destroyed by the White House. The issue of missing White House e-mails first came to light ...
