Researchers at the University of Arizona and Loma Linda University found that a staggering 97 percent of eco-conscious shoppers who tote reusable woven polypropylene bags do not regularly -- if ever -- clean them, breeding "whopping amounts" of bacteria. MONTEBELLO, Calif. (Feb. 14) - A Southern California meatpacking firm has significantly expanded its recall of ground beef and veal that might be contaminated with E. coli. The recall includes approximately 4.9 million additional pounds of products by Huntington Meat Packing Inc. under the Huntington, Imperial Meat Co. and El Rancho brands, the Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said Friday. With the exception of the vegetarians among us, most of us love to sink our teeth into a big, juicy, beef burger now and then. Perhaps we are satisfying some primal desire when we do this. Apparently, we may also taking a big gamble with our health. On Sunday, the New York Times ran a front-page, above-the-fold story about a 22-year-old dance instructor named Stephanie Smith who suffered severe E. coli poisoning in 2007 after eating a hamburger that her mother had grilled.
