Voting Appears to Go Well Despite Ballot Shortages in Conn.

Voting Appears to Go Well Despite Ballot Shortages in Conn.

(Nov. 2) -- Voting in today's contentious midterm elections appeared to go smoothly for the most part, although ballot shortages led to polling hours being extended in Connecticut's largest city. Elsewhere, there was a sprinkling of reports about malfunctioning machines and other glitches, including confoundingly small type on New York ballots and a man in Ohio who was told he couldn't vote because he was dead. Some polling stations ran out of ballots in Bridgeport, Conn., and Mayor Bill Finch asked the state to extend voting for two hours, until 10 p.m. A spokeswoman for Finch said turnout ...

Opinion: Early Voting -- Keep Those Numbers Secret

Opinion: Early Voting -- Keep Those Numbers Secret

(Oct. 26) -- You see it in the headlines: "Democrats encouraged by early voting while Republicans dispute the claim." OK, but why should they know who's voting in the first place? Isn't voting supposed to be a secret? This may get me thrown out of the "secret society of political reporters" (should there ever be one), but I'm opposed to releasing information about who has voted early and where. Operatives from both parties have been checking the voter rolls to see who's been voting early. Apparently there have been more Democrats taking advantage of the early voting opportunities than ...

Democrats Have Edge in Early Voting Turnout, Analysis Finds

Democrats Have Edge in Early Voting Turnout, Analysis Finds

While many polls are portending big losses for Democrats on Election Day, a new analysis on early voting offers a rare bit of good news for the party. The Associated Press tracked more than three million ballots already cast nationwide and determined that Democrats so far have "an edge in a number of states and big counties." The numbers show that more Democrats than Republicans are already voting in Iowa, Maryland, North Carolina, Louisiana and Nevada. The GOP has the edge so far in Florida and Colorado. The two parties are running about even so far in Maine and Ohio. The data is hardly ...

Big Turnout Everywhere

Big Turnout Everywhere

Reuters But uncertainty about the makeup of the new electorate, and whether that high turnout could shatter historic voting patterns or simply reinforce them, casts doubt over opinion polls showing Obama with a solid lead on McCain."The question of who turns out to vote is the key to who becomes the next president," said Steven Schier, a political analyst at Carleton College in Minnesota.Obama is hoping a big boost among new and sporadic voters, particularly blacks and the young, will propel him beyond the total of 56 million ballots for Democrat John Kerry in 2004.But McCain campaign ...

On the Ground in Florida

By  David Knowles - Politics Daily
On the Ground in Florida

A seasonable chill has swept over Florida this week, sending daytime temperatures down into the middle 60's. The horror! Meanwhile, the stationary political front that has gripped the state for months -- nay, years -- hasn't budged. Like a massive hurricane endlessly spinning in place above this swampy plain, the fight for Florida's 27 electoral votes will rage on all the way to election day. The big news here came yesterday, when, in a surprise move, Republican Governor Charlie Crist ordered that early voting hours be extended from eight to twelve hours each day for the remainder of the week. ...

Florida Turnout Huge

By  David Knowles - Politics Daily
Florida Turnout Huge

Yesterday, early voting began in Florida, and I, like a record-setting number of my state's fellow residents, took that first possible opportunity to cast my vote. By 11 a.m., a long line stretched through the lobby of my local public library and out the front door. An hour later, I got my ballot from a harried, yet excited poll worker who informed me that upwards of 1,000 people had already voted. No one here had ever seen such high turnout other than on an actual election day, and there was a "pat-yourself-on-the-back" look of glee in the eyes of most of the people around me. This scene was ...

Happy Fake Election Day, Early Voters!

By  Ken Layne - Politics Daily
Happy Fake Election Day, Early Voters!

The real, American election day may still be five long weeks away, but millions of nutty voters are "voting early" because they just can't sit down and wait it out like the rest of us.In more than 30 states, citizens are ignoring their duty to show up on November 4 and try to fill out a ballot or screw up some touch-screen computer, all because of laziness. Why go to all that trouble when you can just mail in a ballot, today?Because the campaigns are still working hard, raising money and running insane teevee commercials, that's why. And our politicians will keep up the good work until ...
