Like many a sentimental mom, Keely Muse kept all of her daughter's preschool artwork. She probably never dreamed she'd one day sell it to help struggling people across the globe. Tuesday Muse, a 6-year-old kindergartner, may not understand the scope of devastation in Japan, but she knows enough to want to help. "I saw people getting hurt and drowning," she told WXIA-TV. Her mom asked her to think of something she was good at, and to use that talent to help. "That's when she told me, 'I'm a really good artist,'" Keely told WXIA. She enlisted friend and fellow 6-year-old artist Stella, and ...
NEW YORK -- Justin Bieber's hair is officially the stuff of legend: His hair clippings have sold for more than $40,000 on eBay. After the 17-year-old pop sensation chopped off some of his famous locks, he brought the clippings to the "Ellen" show. Host Ellen DeGeneres put them on eBay. When the bidding ended, the clippings went for $40,668. The proceeds are being donated to The Gentle Barn, which rescues neglected and abused animals and uses them to help disadvantaged kids. Bieber's magic touch continues. He's got two albums in the top five on the U.S. album chart this week, and his movie, ...
Question: When can't you sell something someone gave you? Answer: When you're a college football player. Quarterback Terrelle Pryor and four of his Ohio State University teammates have been suspended by the NCAA for the first five games of next season for selling football memorabilia and exchanging autographs for tattoo parlor discounts. Pryor, running back Daniel Herron, wide receiver DeVier Posey, offensive lineman Mike Adams and defensive end Solomon Thomas must also pay from $1,000 to $2,500 each to charity, depending on the value of the items each sold. All five will still be allowed to ...
Losing a child is the worst thing that can happen to a parent -- especially if the child is killed by an Internet predator. Reza Jou, a NASA employee in Houston, knows that pain, and he has vowed to do all he can to prevent any other parent from going through his pain. Three years ago, Jou's daughter, San Diego State University honor student Donna Jou, vanished after meeting up with a man who responded to her tutoring service ad on an online classifieds site. The man turned out to be John Steven Burgess, a three-time convicted sexual predator. Because Donna's body has not been found, ...
(Nov. 26) -- It's become one of the most beloved holiday exclamations, a gleeful cry of warmth and tenderness that evokes so many cups of hot chocolate around a cozy, stocking-draped fireplace: "You'll shoot yer eye out!" In 1983, the movie "A Christmas Story" roughly elbowed its way into our Christmas consciousness. A nostalgic tale of longing, sentimentality and the harsh realities of Midwestern life in the 1940s, the comedy, based on the work of author Jean Shepherd, has become a must-watch-TV marathon classic. Old-time radio, Ovaltine, school bullies and the want of an "Official Red ...
(Oct. 26) -- Meg Whitman, who's running on her record as a successful CEO of eBay and her understanding of the digital economy of the future, has only 250,000 Twitter followers. Jerry Brown, who isn't a shiny Internet politician, has more than a million. But does that mean anything? Does a candidate's box score of Twitter followers and Facebook friends and Ning groups and Flickr albums and the total of those who've opted in for text message updates really mean anything? Are they indications of a passionate depth of support, or are they being used and manipulated by canny consultants to ...
(Sept. 29) -- Here's a little food for thought: What if Hollywood actor Kevin Bacon were actually made out of tasty, crispy bacon? Well, that delicious dream is now a reality thanks to J&D Foods, a Seattle company that specializes in all things bacon, from its very own bacon-flavored salt and mayonnaise -- aka "Baconnaise" -- to bacon-flavored lip balm and "MMMvelopes," envelopes that taste like bacon when the seal is licked. Since owners Justin Esch and Dave Lefkow live by the motto "everything is better with bacon," the duo -- in partnership with bacon-crafting website What Do Bacon Do? -- ...
The 2010 midterm elections have already seen the rise of the Tea Party, the defeat of incumbents no one knew were in trouble, and a fresh batch of self-funding candidates -- not all of whom got out of their primaries with their prospects still alive -- who were willing to trade their fortunes for low-paying, high-flying jobs as elected officials. But three of those wealthy 2010 candidates are introducing a new archetype into American politics: the self-made female business executive who has migrated from the highest rung of the corporate ladder to the rough and tumble reality of the campaign ...
(Sept. 15) -- Money may not be able to buy you love, but if you spend enough, it might be able to buy enough affection to secure a vote or two. After loaning her campaign another $15 million on Tuesday, California Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman made history. The latest cash infusion from her own bank account means that she has now funneled $119 million of her own cash into her contest with Democrat Jerry Brown, setting a record for the most money that a candidate has ever personally ponied up in an attempt to attain public office, the Los Angeles Times reported.
