New home construction rose significantly last month, increasing 40.9 percent from April 2009, CNN Money reports. According to seasonally adjusted numbers from the Commerce Department, housing starts increased to an annual rate of 672,000 homes in April -- nearly 20,000 more than economists had predicted. Construction of single-family homes, a key sector of the housing market, rose 10.2 percent over the month to an annual rate of 593,000.
